Announcing HP Unified Functional Testing version 12

‎03-25-2014 12:00 PM - edited ‎09-09-2015 02:38 PM

This is a very exciting week for HP Software Application Delivery Management (ADM) team, with the launch of HP Apps 12.

Businesses and clients are looking to deliver applications faster than ever before, but still require a gold standard of quality. Built with the customer in mind, Apps 12 enables customers to deliver applications with unprecedented velocity, while maintaining first-rate quality and performance. Apps 12 provides the ability to build, test and deliver at all levels of scale; adding unparalleled flexibility necessary to support the wide range of technologies and environments that encompass the new style of IT. In pressing times for customers to produce faster and better than ever, HP provides application development and testing teams a partner in which to guide them through these ever-changing demands.

Unified Functional Testing (UFT) plays a major piece in this by being the end-to-end functional testing solution that addresses all of the functional automation needs.

I am often asked—what are UFT’s core competences that differentiate it from its competitors? Before we talk about what’s new in version 12, we’ll briefly cover this important question.

To have a clear visualization of the automation tools metaphorical space I created this symbol where the horizontal blue line represents the huge amount of technologies that can be used to create different software applications, the vertical green line represents the things you can test on these technology and the red circle represent the holistic eco-system of quality assurance and management.

UFT provides a superior experience and set of capabilities in all three of these dimensions:

UFT has unmatched breadth of supported technologies, coupled with a strong extensibility mechanism and image based recognition, all aimed to address the technology verity that exist in composite applications.

UFT can test not only the GUI layer, but also the Services /API layer both for web, on-premise and mobile environments, all combined in one, easy-to-use solution with a massive arsenal of ready features and accelerators to allow smart and fast test creation.

Functional testing is core to quality and core to successful application release, and as a result, UFT is in the center of HP Application Delivery Management.  As such it supports integration at multiple levels.  For example:

  • UFT offers full integration to HP ALM and HP Quality Center Enterprise for requirements relation to tests, test execution, reporting and defect management – providing full traceability and reuse across multiple projects.
  • Business Process Testing – which was separate product integration is now a core part of UFT.
  • Service Virtualization is fully integrated to UFT so users are now able to run their tests against virtual services as well as real services.
  • HP Sprinter’s integration allows UFT users to accelerate their automated test creation by taking advantage of the manual or exploratory testing that was done with the ease of Sprinter.
  • Lastly UFT is integrated to the most popular of continuous integration tools – Jenkins – which gives users the ability to continuously test as part of the development cycles.

So what’s new in UFT version 12?

Beginning with UFT version 11.5, we started to provide significant new content in each of our service packs.  So, naturally, version 12 aggregates all the content from these service packs.  If you would like to learn what is the delta between version 11.5 to version 12, read my previous announcements on Service pack 2 and Service pack 3.

Done reading? Good, now let’s talk about what we have been up to in the last four months since the release of Service pack 3 last December.  The full list of new features and enhancements can be found in the product readme file, so I will only cover here the three most important advancements from my point of view which are: Safari, Installation and PAM updates.

Safari- with UFT 12 you can now test Web applications on a Safari browser that is running on a remote Mac computer.

We still have some work ahead of us to give our users more capabilities on Safari but the main thing which is the execution of a UFT test on a Safari-Mac environment is supported.

Installation- UFT 12 delivers new installation packages, enabling you to install UFT:

  • Faster – We now also provide a zip format package that can be downloaded from the web, its size is significantly smaller than previous releases (~70% decrease!) which dramatically speed up the installation time.
  • Simpler- Straight forward wizard installation or a silent one, both with no additional post-installation programs
  • More secured and without needing to temporarily disable the User Account Control (UAC) on your computer.
  • Multilanguage – You can now install UFT in any supported language without the need to install in addition a separate language pack.

Product Availability Matrix (PAM)- UFT 12 supports new versions of technologies, like:

  • Operation System: Win 8, Win 8.1 (tech preview), Windows server 2012
  • Browsers: IE11, Chrome till version 33, FF till version 27, Safari 6, 6.1, 7
  • Others: .Net 4.5, Delphi XE2, Stingray 11.1, Web Dynprop ABAP for NW 7.31

Now that you know what’s new in UFT 12 and the added value that it brings, would you like to play with it?
