Scoot over Apple and Google…the enterprise app store is coming

‎12-11-2013 07:13 PM - edited ‎09-09-2015 11:02 AM

At one time having an enterprise store was looked at as a means to ensure IT security. Businesses wanted to protect themselves from the trend of employees going outside of the firewall (to public app stores) to obtain business software that would help them do their jobs better—a strong concern amongst IT leaders.

The times, they are a changing. Consumers see that the app store of today is offering a greater selection of business apps, more convenience, and better price— changing the enterprise app store landscape. Today, progressive enterprises are not only building app stores for their employees, but for their external business customers, too.

While enterprise app stores have evolved to take various forms over the last few years, but it’s the runaway success of an apps store for mobile devices that have validated the model.  It has also created a critical mass for expectations in the minds of millions of users about the quality and ease-of-use they should expect when they obtain business software in a marketplace setting

There is one more thing

2014 will be the first year that you will see your co-workers downloading business software from enterprise app stores for use on their wearable devices, such as their Google Glasses and iWatches.

Wearable devices, where consumers can enjoy the applications of a smartphone in a completely hands-free fashion, are predicted to become increasingly more popular over the next year. It’s anticipated that employees will begin to download enterprise apps onto their wearable devices, such as Google Glass and iWatches, creating a benchmark year in technology.

Not everyone agrees that wearable devices will take off this year.  There are skeptics regarding wearable devices like Google Glass, who don’t think they will have a large impact, especially in a workplace that requires the use of both hands.

These new technologies mean there is a shift in the wind. App developers are re-working their apps for the Google Mirror API, which enables integration with the new Google Glass technology.

2014 is fast-approaching, and in the world of enterprise apps, things are only just beginning to get hot.

Remains to be seen if Google Glasses and iWatches will become a trend in the near future, the opinion of many is that they will not, because few people are interested in such devices.

An Enterprise app store is a must for Google and Apple, especially when Windows Phone apps can be deployed in separate groups for every company.
