SSH problem connecting to Linux server - v11

I upgraded one of my servers to v11. After I did so I have 6 Linux servers that fail SSH connection. The SiteScope is installed on a Windows 2008 server and it is trying to SSH connect to a remote Linux machine. This connection worked fine with v10 and only started failing with v11 (with no changes made to the remote server connection).

Has anyone seen issues begin with their v11 installation? Is there a configuration parameter or something? I have other SSH connections that are working fine - just these 6 specifically. I checked with the sysadmin and the logs are showing authentication accepted. But the result on SiteScope is that v1 and v2 SSH failed.

Hello, Edward. What kind of problem you can find in SiteScope logs? Timeouts or something else? Error reading, for example? Could you please provide some parts of logs? What about test of remotes - can it be executed succesfully? Do you have issues with all monitors or some specific monitors were affected? For example, CPU monitor or Log Monitor? Thanks,Sergey

Re: SSH problem connecting to Linux server - v11

I have looked in the logs and all I see if the failed monitors which is being caused by the inability to connect to the server. I am running on a Windows platform and have 34 Linux remote servers defined. Of those only 5 are failing to connect. These 5 connected fine with v10.12. When I say they fail to connect I mean if I go to the remote server entry and ask for a test the connection fails with the error "remote command error timed out reading (-996)" for 4 of the servers. The fifth is getting a different error - "remote command error unable to connect to server (-998)".

As I mentioned - these worked fine with v10.12. And the sys admin says his logs show a successful connection. I have tried changing the setting from Red Hat Linux to just Linux but get the same results.

Re: SSH problem connecting to Linux server - v11

Hi,

Try the following settings, and let me know if it works

1. For each Red Hat connection, enable the option SSH Only
2. Go to master.config file and add the following parameter a the end of the file: _numberOfRepeatExecForSSHConnection=4
3. Restart SiteScope service
4. Test your connections.

I made the changes but see the same results. We already had the configuration parameter but it was set to 1 so I changed to 4.

I will be out of the office for the next week so will not be able to work this again until I return. I appreciate the assistance. It seems v11 must have changed something but what I cannot determine.

Re: SSH problem connecting to Linux server - v11

Hi Edward Fultz,

Try this.

Enable the SSH debug in order to get more information about the error.

- Stop the SiteScope service.
- Rename the error.log (Example: error.log.old)
- Create another error.log file (empty)
- Go to and open the /conf/core/Tools/log4j/PlainJava/log4.propierties file.
- Check the parameters loglevel = ERROR and monitor.loglevel = ERROR.
- Be sure the following lines have the DEBUG word:

################################################################################################################################
# SSH Trace log
################################################################################################################################

log4j.category.com.mercury.sitescope.util.ssh=DEBUG, monitors.appender
log4j.additivity.com.mercury.sitescope.util.ssh=false

log4j.category.SSHTrace=DEBUG, monitors.appender
log4j.additivity.SSHTrace=false

- Start the SiteScope service and test the Unix Remote Connection that is failing.
- Stop the SiteScope service.
- Check the error.log (/logs).

Let me know the error message in that file.

Further, try to connect to the remote server using the Mindterm tool and let me know if you could do it.

Please execute Mindterm ( /WEB-INF/lib/Mindterm.jar ) and then go to â Fileâ -> Connect to create the connection

I am having the same issue.  I have a ticket open with HP which has been escalated to the Sitescope Development team.

I have both 11.10 and 11.11 servers having the same issue.  QCCR1I60863 does not address my issue.  I have existing unix preferences and I am not using the key file authentication.

Re: SSH problem connecting to Linux server - v11

I stumbled upon an interesting idea on another forum: are the machines SiteScope fails to properly connect to using ksh as shell for the SiteScope user?

If they do, could you, please, try changing it to bash?

I restart SiteScope and test the monitor.  It works the very first time and fails afterward.

I am using sis11.20.  When I trying to connect ilo3.   I get the "remote command error unable to connect to server (-998)".

after enalbe  track I get log:

com.mercury.sitescope.util.ssh.exception.SSHV2ReadFailedException: Unknown error while reading from server, returned from reading without readComplete flag being true. Unknown error while reading from server, returned from reading without readComplete flag being true.

But Putty can connect to ilo3.

It should be a bug, anyone can hlep?

Hello,

Issues in v.11 are commonly caused by Korn Shell (ksh), SiS gets along with Bash; remote command errors are related to this. Check if you can resolve this issue by putting this in "initialize shell environment" field /bin/bash or /bin/bash; stty echo. An even better solution is to make sure SiS user is assigned to bash as default shell in target server user configs.

We are facing a similar issue connecting to HP-UX from Sitescope 11.21, "Attempting SSH1 Connect. remote command error timed out reading (-996)

When connecting to the server from Mindterm tool on Sitescope with SSH V2 only, we are unable to do so.

But when connecting the same server using SSH V2 from a other machines, we are able to successfully login.

SiS Version : 11.21

SiS Server Make : Windows Server 2008 SP1

Remote Server: HP/UX 64 Bit server

Any suggestions to resolve this issue?

Re: SSH problem connecting to Linux server - v11

I am experiencing a similar issue. On my end it seems to be between RSA and ECDSA.

The SSH connection is not made with Servers using ECDSA Host key algorithms. Is there a way to enable ECDSA in MindTerm for Sitescope to use it?

I am running 11.24.271 64bit

Thanks

Re: SSH problem connecting to Linux server - v11

No, the list of kex algorithms is hardcoded. If this is about new Kex in latest OpenSSH there's an Enhancement Request to support them, currently you can only change the algorithm in server side as workaround.
