Prior to HP Discover, my server brethren announced the HP ProLiant SL4500 - a new server based product that was positioned for "big data".  I was working to get a podcast with a couple of guys on the team when we realized that we'd all be at HP Discover together so I offered to do a video with them in their booth.  That turned out to be a great choice because seeing is believing - or I should say understanding.

At Discover, I talked with Charles Hanna who manages the Smart Storage engineering team and Nigel Church, part of the ProLiant marketing team.  Both Charles and Nigel wrote blogs introducing the SL4500:

Here's the video I did with them at HP Discover.

We introduced HP StoreAll at HP Discover, another solution targeting big data and we also have the HP AppSystem for Apache Hadoop (announced at HP Discover in June 2012).  So you might be thinking - when would you consider StoreAll, HP AppSystem for Hadoop, or ProLiant SL4500?  Here are a couple of the fundamental differences:

  • For the customer who wants a turnkey solution for analytics, HP AppSystem for Hadoop is a great solution - check out the press announcement page (it has lots of links) to learn more about it.
  • StoreAll is an integrated solution with data services and high availability.  With the SL4500, you would need an application to deliver this.
  • The focus of StoreAll is big data as an archive; the SL4500 is great for big data analytics with your favorite analytics software.

One of the ChalkTalks I did (but didn't original include in any blog post) is a StoreAll architecture ChalkTalk; while it doesn't compare to the SL4500, it shows the value-add data services.  Here it is:

UPDATE (15 Jan 2013): I just became aware of this technical whitepaper that talks about StoreAll with Autonomy Consolidated Archive - you can see the kinds of solutions that are possible with StoreAll from this paper.

Lastly, check out the SL4500 page at
