Is cloud storage killing on-premises storage?

We're going to take a short pause all the happenings at VMworld because I have a timely podcast I want to share today. Earlier this week, I saw an article on TechCrunch titled Cloud Storage Is Eating the World Alive. The article looked at a single quarter of the IDC Worldwide Total Disk Storage System Market tracker, and drew the conclusion that traditional on-premise storage is a "dead man walking". Now, I agree that some of the vendors listed, like IBM and their continued movement away from infrastructure, might fit that category but I think it's far too early to say that cloud storage is putting an end to the storage industry.

I did a podcast with one of our cloud storage solution managers in HP Storage, Scott Wells, and discussed the topic with him. It's a short, concise podcast so give it a listen.

If you rather download this as a podcast, right click here and save the MP3 file. You can also subscribe to my podcast on iTunes - go to the iTunes store and search for "Around the Storage Block" or you can open this link and click on the "View in iTunes" button under my picture.

Well, I need to pack my bags for VMworld but if you have an opinion on the topic, would love to hear from you. And if you see me at VMworld, be sure to stop me to say hello!

I beleive I read the same article on TechCrunch. I noticed that it was written by a person that is with a cloud service company, From my understanding, 3PAR sales are still going up up up. There is a role for cloud storage, it is not not going to replace on-site storage as the article suggests. I still talk with plenty of people about tape.
