The cloud revolution marches on – with HP 3PAR StoreServ and OpenStack

What is OpenStack?

OpenStack is a cloud operating system that controls large pools of compute, storage and networking resources throughout your data center, all managed through a dashboard that gives your administrators control while empowering users to provision resources through a web interface. This means you no longer have to rely on proprietary software when looking to build a private, public or hybrid cloud—but can instead rely on a comprehensive and complete Open Source toolkit.

HP 3PAR contribution to the OpenStack community

To help meet the needs that many larger organizations and service providers have for enterprise-class storage, we developed the HP 3PAR StoreServ Block Storage Drivers which supports the OpenStack technology across both iSCSI and Fibre Channel protocols. This provides the flexibility and cost-effectiveness of a cloud-based open-source platform for your mission-critical environments and high resiliency requirements.  This support was first introduced in April 2013 with the OpenStack Grizzly release. In the following OpenStack Havana release, we enabled support for HP 3PAR Storage QoS (aka Priority Optimization) which is a key feature when looking at multi-tenancy in a shared cloud environment.

Overview of some important additions in OpenStack Icehouse

Enhanced Priority Optimization (Storage QoS) features

Additional Priority Optimization capabilitiesOpenStack2.jpg

  • Minimum bandwidth goal
  • Minimum IOPS goal
  • Latency goal
  • Priority of QoS rule over other rules (low, normal, high)

 Implemented and released in Icehouse

  •  HP 3PAR StoreServ Block Storage Drivers now use the Cinder API qos_specs instead of extra_specs
  • Requires HP 3PAR OS 3.1.3 or later

 Havana supported capabilities

  • Maximum Bandwidth and IOPS limits

Block Storage Driver features

  • Volume Migration offloaded to storage: unattached volumes can be migrated between different storage pools (CPGs or Clusters) directly on the backend

Fibre Channel Zone Manager
Fibre Channel (FC) Zone Manager is a new driver interface that was created in Icehouse to allow SAN switch vendors to add your own drivers to zone your SAN switches:

  • Enables private SAN deployments leveraging DC infrastructure
  • Enabled in the HP 3PAR FC Block Storage Driver
  • Icehouse supports Brocade Fibre Channel Zone driver (requires FOS v6.4 or higher)

Why HP 3PAR StoreServ and OpenStack?

HP 3PAR is committed to bringing enterprise-class storage to OpenStack Ecosystems. OpenStack is primarily deployed as an Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) solution that in order to be truly successful requires an infrastructure with a storage architecture that enables IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS).

HP 3PAR Storage is the only storage platform in the industry that can meet the demands of the modern data center because it’s built for virtualization, cloud and ITaaS. With its common operating system reaching from midrange to high-end and including flash, you can build your own hybrid cloud and leverage different classes of storage arrays to meet different tenant’s needs. In order to facilitate the development and deployment of an OpenStack infrastructure, HP 3PAR supports Ubuntu and RHEL that are the most popular OS for OpenStack deployment. And that’s how revolutions are won!
