Data Protection: 10 Tips to Clear Information Clutter from your Backup and Recovery Process

ScottBaker ‎06-13-2014 08:41 AM - edited ‎02-19-2015 12:49 PM

It is estimated that only about 10% of files stored in a typical organization are ever read more than once.  Sure, a few more important documents and logs need to be kept for audit or compliance purposes, but these won’t change that figure significantly. What this means is perhaps 90% of what an organization stores is essentially clutter. Given the unabated growth of data, the infrastructure demands are only going to increase when we look at all the trends impacting industries throughout the world: the Internet of Things, big data, cloud, mobility and the rest, all of which mean more data!

But what if we could find a way to make all this data useful?  Would the hoarder next door—or in the datacenter in our case—be justified?

I was a panelist in a recent web seminar where we covered trends related to this growing norm. But before you can start decluttering your hoards of data, proper strategies on determining what is stored, where it should be tiered and how it can be used to make a difference to IT operations and business processes needs to happen.

Some tips to get started include:

  1. Take the time needed to purge through the information.
  2. Identify what data is critical to the business units in your organization.
  3. Develop a plan for what to do with the data that is not essential to keep.
