Data Protection: Petabytes of data - That's cute!

‎03-31-2014 04:08 PM - edited ‎02-19-2015 12:26 PM

Cloud services are taking off, and vendors are shouting proudly about the size and scale of their operations in the attempt to prove success and attract customers, drawing them away from smaller suppliers. But the thing that gets me—is that the advertisings’ boastings are in the context of Petabytes. Is that really an impressive number to boast about?

Firstly, what is a Petabyte? It is 1,024 Terabytes. So what’s a Terabyte? 1TB = 1,024 Gigabytes.

1 Petabyte is enough to store the DNA of the entire population of the USA—and then clone them, twice![source]

Netflix uses 1 Petabyte to store its videos for streaming.[source]

While this may sound like a lot, it pales in comparison to HP’s LiveVault server data protection service. HP LiveVault has over 1 Exabyte of restorable data under management. 1 Exabyte = 1,024 Petabytes.

So next time you’re checking out service stats of a vendor, stop and think to understand how significant (or not) the figures are that you’re being presented.

Check out some other stats on HP’s data protection offerings in my blog post here.
