Information Governance: Spring cleaning for your closets and your structured data

‎04-11-2014 06:41 AM - edited ‎04-11-2014 07:01 AM

Here in Texas, the days are getting longer, temperatures are rising, and I am ready to throw open the windows; let the fresh air in and clear out the clutter for a fresh start to spring! It’s the perfect time to declutter, clean, and organize.

My favorite part of spring cleaning is closet cleaning—I love the immediate benefits! Clutter is stressful, so when I take the time to organize my space, I feel more relaxed and a have a sense of accomplishment.

Spring cleaning should not be limited to our homes: It is a great time to clear out data clutter! The concept is the same whether we are organizing our closets or managing our data.

Spring Cleaning

As we buy new clothes to update our wardrobes for work and play, our closet capacity decreases and forces us to utilize other closets or storage facilities. This means added storage expenses and frustration caused by not being able to locate specific clothes as needed.

Data Management

As data volume increases, the production database expands in size and operating expenses required to address the growth increase too; resulting in performance degradation for the end users of your applications.

The solution is simple: Just address these basic questions that I first brought up in my previous blog post.

  1. What are we keeping and why?
  2. Where is it stored?
  3. Can we still access and use it?

Congratulations!

You have now developed a plan to organize your closets, so that all of your clothes are easily accessible. At the same time, you have outlined a planned data remediation approach to manage data. Important data is still accessible and costs have been reduced!

Learn why a new approach to storage management needs to be considered for archiving structured data—including the need to make data cost-effectively accessible after an application has been retired.  In our webcast featuring Gartner, we discuss some new best practices will help you map out a plan for more effective data management.
