Information Governance: Wrapping up ACC

JohnPepe ‎11-07-2013 04:00 AM - edited ‎11-08-2013 09:32 AM

The HP Autonomy eDiscovery Team wrapped up the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) Annual Meeting last week, with great success. This year’s ACC Los Angeles event was packed with informative and thought-provoking information sessions and plenary panels led by leaders across the legal profession.

Judging from this year’s collective session topics, the hot subject was multi-jurisdictional challenges. As information technology makes our world smaller, increasing the number of cross-border dealings, we will see interesting questions arise from issues such as collecting data from foreign jurisdictions, each with firmly entrenched data privacy laws. It’s no wonder that lawyers were crammed into Judge Scheindlin’s panel on cross-border issues just so that they can hear the latest/greatest from the matriarch of eDiscovery.

Also contributing to the multi-jurisdiction topic was HP’s Chief Privacy & Cyber Security Counsel, Harvey Jang in his Managing the Processes and Risks of Cross-Border Discovery panel. As Discovery obligations vary from country to country, Harvey and fellow panelists explored the cross-border compliance obligations for multi-nationals. Topics such as balancing the FRCP requirements against a sovereign nation’s data privacy laws highlighted the growing international complexity of discover/eDiscovery compliance. Recent regulatory actions, litigations and sanctions were explored.

Attendees also flocked to our own George Tziahanas’ panel on Social Media in the Workplace: Trade Secret Issues and Legal Ethics. This session gravitated towards the emerging ethical traps arising out of social media. For example, should you ‘friend’ a judge on Facebook? What are the implications of viewing the LinkedIn profile of a witness in one of your cases? The contributors and audience at this panel had a lot of questions and input on these common, relatable scenarios, resulting in an engaging discussion.

Now for some fun highlights.

If you were lucky enough to be invited to the exclusive ACC International Litigation / Legal Affairs Committee networking event, sponsored by HP Autonomy, Morrison Foerster, and LexMundi, you would have caught a glimpse of the now famous George Tziahanas, fresh off of his Social Media panel, on the red carpet with Joan Rivers.

Finally, a very special ‘thank you’ to HP Autonomy’s Nicole Jones and Kathy Kuehne for putting on a truly spectacular event while also helping raise $5,000 for local charity. HP Autonomy is known for innovation and market leadership. It is in that spirit that Kathy and Nicole decided to allocate this years’ conference resources for a worthwhile cause, near and dear to our fellow corporate counsel by donating $5 in the name of every person who registered to the California Bar Foundation. We thank all attendees and registrants for helping HP Autonomy reach our $5,000 goal.

The HP Autonomy eDiscovery Team looks forward to next year’s event in New Orleans where I predict we will see even more cross-border topics. HP Autonomy’s 2013 theme of taking control of eDiscovery by embracing a broader and proactive information governance strategy, will be even more relevant in 2014.
