Analytics for Human Information: Cha-cha-changes

Change is essential for growth. In the software world, change brings opportunity, opportunity to find solutions to problems that have yet to happen. Being the CTO for the video division at HP Autonomy, with  17 years in the video software industry and 6 years prior to that in machine vision technology, I have developed a fair understanding of what customers require from technology solutions when looking to solve issues surrounding how best to make use of video content as an information asset.


On the subject of “Change” I would like to point out how much has changed in video. As an opening stance to potential customers I have always said “If you cannot see the image you are looking for in the video with your own eyes, then don’t expect the computer to see it”.  This has always stood me well up until last week when I met with a very good customer from the military community. I was told a story about the use of our solution on UAV footage in Afghanistan.  According to the customer, the solution we provided is capable of spotting humans moving through a wooded area that no matter how hard the operators tried they could not see.  Now this is a step change and it is due mainly to the improvement in camera technology.  The sensors are providing more detail than the human brain can compute whilst our technology really can benefit from that extra information.


We still can’t see round corners like they do in the movies but maybe one day!


On the subject of movies: I was at HP Discover Las Vegas 2013 the other week and witnessed the speech given by Kevin Bacon on “degrees of separation”, very interesting it was too.  As an event HP Discover was inspiring. I have been to many trade shows at the Sands Convention centre in Las Vegas overtime, but to see it just hosting an HP event around technology for business and IT professionals makes you realise the momentum that is building.  While at HP Discover I was interviewed on camera by a colleague who was interested in hearing my thoughts on how we help organizations manage video content and intelligently use it as an information asset.
