Data Protection: How satisfied are you with your ROBO backup strategy?

GaganBhatia ‎08-12-2013 09:42 AM - edited ‎02-19-2015 12:46 PM

One of the core requirements of today’s data protection solution is providing comprehensive protection for enterprise and remote office and branch office (ROBO) locations. Whether you are a retailer, a financial institution, or a package delivery company, chances are your data is spread across multiple geographically distributed locations. In most cases, the data getting created at these locations are extremely critical to local operations. Yet, many organizations are struggling to protect all corporate data, especially existing in remote office and branch office locations. They’re either utilizing traditional tape based approach to keep an offsite copy of data or simply have no protection at all. Why is this?

The simple answer is data protection requirements of remote office and branch office locations are unique. The traditional approaches requiring onsite IT expertise doesn’t work as ROBO locations generally have limited or no IT expertise onsite. Also, the scale of infrastructure in these locations is smaller compared to primary data centers at headquarters hence simplicity is the key; fewer the systems the better. Here are some key elements of a solution for protecting ROBO environments:

  • Cost.  Whether a solution can work with existing resources and infrastructure is a key cost consideration. Hardware independence or leveraging existing hardware is best for these environments.  An organization may have thousands of locations that require protection so cost/location has to be low.
  • Flexibility. Different locations may have different requirements. Some location may require local backup for quick recovery while others need direct backup to primary datacenter.
  • Centralization. Centralized operations are required so that IT staff in central location can deploy, protect, and manage backup and recovery process from one place. Configuration has to be simple as well.
  • Recovery. How soon the site can be recovered in case of a disaster? Keeping data offsite and readily available, if possible in multiple locations, is important for rapid recovery of a local site.

Keeping above requirements in mind, HP came up with an innovative technology, HP StoreOnce, which is developed by HP labs. HP StoreOnce is embedded in both HP Data Protector software and StoreOnce appliances enabling federated deduplication within an enterprise. The federated deduplication approach is designed for maximum deployment flexibility as it allows deduplication to run on the application server, on the media server, or on the backup target device. Central management, remote deployment, low-bandwidth data movement and replication are key tenets of HP’s solution for enterprise and remote offices.  Hundreds of customers globally are adopting HP StoreOnce solution as it is the only solution in the market that is based on single deduplication technology in both software and hardware offering maximum deployment flexibility, storage efficiency and performance, and centralized management through HP Data Protector UI.

Here is the link to a recorded webinar where my colleague, Mike Peebles in product marketing, spoke to Ryan Burgess, infrastructure architect at North Shore Credit Union about their backup and recovery challenges and how HP’s solution was able to meet their needs. I also encourage you to read this whitepaper that highlights HP’s total solution for enterprise and ROBO office protection. This is just a simple proof point that innovation is alive and well at HP.
