Data Protection: How to configure DP 8.1 and the Granular Recovery Extension for VMware vSphere

The Granular Recovery Extension for VMware vSphere 5.1 and 5.5 enables virtual admins to easily manage their own recoveries directly from vCenter, using a plugin that is available for HP Data Protector 8.1.

There are some important steps to be aware of during installation and configuration. This short “how to” is meant to assist customers who want to get this feature up-and-running as soon as possible!

Step 1: If using VMWare integration, make sure that you edit C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\tomcat\conf\server.xml

Step 2: Change settings from <Host appBase="webapps" autoDeploy="false"  to <Host appBase="webapps" autoDeploy="true” so that it will deploy correctly.

Step 3: Once that has been done, import the vCenter server into DP as a vCenter server.

Step 4: To add a new client, select add new client. Then, select the vCenter server, and install a disk agent

Note: You will most likely have to do this twice before it will show up listed in the client list. It should look like this.

Step 5: Next, you want to add the VMWare GRE web plug-in.

Step 6: Select the component and click finish.

Note: Once completed, it will look like this.

Step 7: Log into the vCenter Server, and you should see the HP Data Protector plug-in.

Step 8: Next, you will have to add the disk agent component.

After completing these straight forward steps, you should be able to manage your VMware vSphere single item recovery tasks from within vCenter.
