We recently talked about how HP Virtualization Performance Viewer (vPV) has leap-frogged into new aspects of monitoring virtual and cloud environments. Now that we have the next major revision of vPV, version 2.00, I want to tell you about the new and exciting capabilities of vPV.

Improved user interface and unified dashboard


dashboard5.pngvPV now features a unified dashboard for an at-a-glance view of performance, capacity and the health of your multi-hypervisor-based virtual datacenters. You can customize the dashboard’s widgets based on the user persona. The virtualization administrator monitoring the environment for performance problems can pick a different view than a capacity planner keeping a tab on the usage trends and days to capacity projections of the critical resources. With the latest version of vPV, you can choose the widgets you want on the dashboard.


The revamped menu-driven user interface of vPV is responsive and adaptive. A consistent and coherent navigation scheme is adopted overall so you can drill-down from a summary view to details on demand, any time.




Alerts to detect anomalies


The new release of vPV contains a real-time alerting system that continuously analyzes the performance data to detect resource saturation, performance bottlenecks and other abnormalities in your virtualized environment.


alerts5.pngKeep the quick time to value in mind - the alerting system is delivered out of the box with zero configurations needed to activate it. The anomaly detection mechanism is based on baselines and pre-configured thresholds and it analyzes multiple performance and configuration metrics of the virtualized resources. The rules have been designed according to the best practices professed by the vendor and professionals in the industry. The alert reports the symptom, as well as possible causes and recommendations to remediate the symptom. It also provides context relevant links to reports and graphs to aid in the investigation. More importantly, you can integrate vPV with HPOM to forward topology and alerts to Ops Bridge.




Modeler to analyze and plan for capacity


Most often, administrators confront several questions while planning for the capacity of resources in a virtualized environment. For example, does the VMware cluster have enough resources to accommodate a new set of VM workloads starting next month? If yes, what would be its impact on the resource utilization? If not, is there a shortfall in CPU, memory or storage? How large is the shortfall?


modeler1.jpgThe capacity modeler of vPV comes to your assistance here. It helps to simulate future resource utilization and observe its impact on the capacity. You can simulate multiple actions like adding or cloning VMs for different periods of time in future. The modeler output provides the shortfall details if the new requirement cannot be met with the existing capacity. You can even simulate deleting hypervisor hosts in a cluster. If the reduced capacity can meet the existing workload’s requirement, you can use the hosts elsewhere where there is a need—deferring procurement of expensive hardware.



Enriched Hyper-V monitoring


workbench5.pngBeing true to its vendor-neutral model, monitoring of Hyper-V environments has been enriched significantly in the new release. vPV can now source performance metrics from Hyper-V hosts at a much more granular time interval. You can visualize the performance of your Hyper-V domain in vPV’s treemaps and workbench. You can generate reports to study trends and more importantly, view capacity usage and forecast and get recommendations to right-size the VMs to improve the overall performance and efficiency of the virtual environment.






Seamless user experience with HP Cloud Service Automation


With the new single sign-on capability, CSA users can seamlessly navigate to vPV. By integrating vPV with CSA, users can monitor the performance, observe resource utilization trends and obtain recommendations to fine tune and right-size the virtual machines owned by them. You can equip the VMs with the light-weight HP Compute Sensor to get visibility into them via the real-time guest OS drilldown function.
