Efficiently managing Virtual Connect environments

on ‎11-19-2013 07:19 PM

As the most popular interconnect choice for HP BladeSystem, it’s important to understand the technologies and tools available to manage HP Virtual Connect in an efficient manner. A large part of the value and cost-of-ownership benefits of Virtual Connect comes from simplified management, reduced administration time and also the improved collaboration that Virtual Connect enables as part of a Converged Infrastructure. Because of its wire-once architecture and the abstraction of physical interfaces at the server edge, Virtual Connect operations can be accomplished through software control, so servers can change their uplink paths and addresses can be moved without an administrator physically visiting the rack where it’s deployed, so changes can be performed more easily and in a timelier manner. HP Virtual Connect is particularly well-suited to environments with server virtualization, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) or cloud architectures, and is a key foundation technology for HP VirtualSystem and CloudSystem.

HP Virtual Connect Manager (VCM) is the embedded manager within Virtual Connect Ethernet, Flex-10 and FlexFabric modules. It is the core application for configuring and managing single and multi-enclosure Virtual Connect (VC) domain environments. Access to VCM occurs over the same out-of-band Ethernet connection used to access the Onboard Administrator in BladeSystem c-Class enclosures and server blade Integrated Lights-Out management engine (iLO) connections on a separate management network.
