The Converged Data Center: More than "the new mainframe"

on ‎03-21-2014 04:54 PM

Is the data center the new mainframe?

Blogger Arthur Cole thinks so (see this IT Business Edge post), pointing to the emphasis on “mainframe-like” features such as pooled resources, high utilization rates, and integrated systems. These, together with software-defined management, give us today’s big iron-ish data center: “a monolithic infrastructure that can be reconfigured and repurposed largely in software with little or no alteration on the hardware side, save the occasional upgrade to new, more powerful equipment.”

A compelling insight. But it’s worth remembering that there are other key aspects of the data center to consider, beyond rapidly converging infrastructure. HP’s Converged Data Center is a more holistic model, encompassing facilities, people, and processes as well as Cole’s “monolithic infrastructure.” Here’s a great introduction to the model from Chris Coggrave, HP’s Worldwide Director for IT Infrastructure Services:

You can read more about this view of convergence in Chris’s blog post Converging the Data Center for a Hybrid Future. And learn how newly announced HP services can help your organization gain the benefits of data center infrastructure management in Blast through the barriers to DCIM.

With using the cloud computing at your workplace you can reduce the use of local computing resources at your place. This means you do not need servers to secure your data and cloud makes them available to businesses with ample amount of space and resource to carry out a number of day to day business activities.
