Vianet Upgrades IT Infrastructure to Handle Growth in Customer Demands: HP Converged Infrastructure

‎04-16-2013 12:09 PM - edited ‎09-30-2015 06:55 AM

UK company Vianet provides the IT infrastructure and services to help companies exploit data that is being generated every minute of every day. Whether it’s tills in shops, petrol pumps or vending machines, information is being created that can be invaluable to retailers. Its Telemetry division provides remote telemetry services using machine to machine (M2M) connections to gather the remote data, and pass it to Vianet’s servers at its main data center. This enables businesses to see, in real time, how their assets are performing – for example, to review which gaming machines are most profitable, or to see exactly what is required to refill vending machines.

The company has been successful, and Vianet has grown from around 130 to 260 employees in the last three years, as well as increasing the customer data it stores by a factor of more than twenty. When planning to meet growth in customer numbers and changing requirements, Vianet needed to scale out its infrastructure. The scalability of the HP BladeSystem and the HP StoreVirtual 4500 has enabled Vianet to respond to its customers’ needs. When it requires more processing power, for example when it wins a new client, it can simply slot another blade server into the chassis, with zero disruption and no downtime.

“We are very much in favor of converged infrastructures, as they can provide a lot of equipment and power in a small space. The HP BladeSystem and HP StoreVirtual Storage achieve this, and complement each other well.” —Mark Woods, head of IT infrastructure and support, Vianet

“The flexibility and expandability of the HP BladeSystem, and the ability to ‘hot add’ interconnects to expand our network backbone, are excellent,” says Woods. “We can just plug blades in and they become part of the VMware cluster, so provisioning servers, more CPUs and memory is quick and easy.”

All the upfront planning has paid handsome benefits for Vianet.

 IT improvements

  • Reduced power consumption in server room by 70 percent
  • Saved 50 percent of storage costs due to thin provisioning features of HP StoreVirtual
  • Provided 10G backbone connectivity, saving £50,000 that would otherwise be required to buy 10G switches

Business benefits

  • Cut time to provision services to meet customer requests by more than 90 percent – typically from several weeks to one or two hours
  • Enabled Vianet to meet its SLA to customers of 99.98 percent uptime, with no unplanned outages for more than a year and a half
