What if your data center search tools were as easy to use as searching the web?

When you search for directions to the latest hot restaurant, it’s a simple matter of typing in a few words or, increasingly, speaking a few commands, to locate what you need. When it comes to navigating your data center, though, it’s a different story. Traditional converged infrastructure management tools rely on a tree-and-branch function that force you to think in a way that no one really thinks, going from tree to branch to leaf as you navigate through folders and subfolders. Not only is this a counterintuitive way to arrange information; it also doesn’t scale very well to handle the complexity of today’s data center, with potentially tens of thousands of virtual machines.

I was thinking about this process the other night when I was deciding where to file a folder for my child’s Scout troop. Should I file it under my child’s name? Or should I put it in a folder marked Scouting? I certainly didn’t want to bury one manila folder inside another manila folder.

Yet traditional data center search tools force you to follow just such a convoluted path, nesting one hierarchy inside another. There are many ways to organize information – do you start with Linux, or blade servers, or rack-mounted servers? One person’s method might not make sense to another person. Worse still, once you set up that system, you’re stuck with it, no matter how illogical it might become.

Why flat search works best

A tree-and-branch system assumes that there’s a fixed relationship between the branch and the leaves, and we all know that’s not the case when it comes to your converged infrastructure. As the data center grows and business demands more applications, relationships shift over time, making the system more inefficient and forcing you to spend more time and money managing it.

But what if searching your data center was more like using Google? What if you could manage your data center using search functions that treat all data as flat, replacing a strict command-line interface with a user-friendly look, overlaid on a powerful search-and-retrieval engine? And what if you could view search results in a visual display with active links, just as you can with your smartphone app? Imagine being able to conduct a search by typing, “Find all blades or enclosures that look like X,” and getting a visual overview of where all those resources are located.

What do system administrators want?

As your data center expands to meet the growing business needs of your organization, you need a tool that reflects the way you think. At HP, we interviewed 150 data center operators and conducted thousands of design iterations to determine exactly what system administrators need to search for, and how best to present those search results when they need them.

With its powerful and user-friendly Smart Search, HP OneView converged infrastructure management software delivers a new level of efficiency to the data center. What could your data center staff do with more time?
