Why Do It Yourself doesn’t work in today’s IT

celialawren on ‎11-25-2013 12:46 PM

There are some things I like to do from scratch like make dinner. But when it comes to wine, I don’t go through the steps of purchasing, blending and crushing grapes, then bottling the wine. No, I go to a wine shop and rely on an expert to pick that stellar bottle for the dinner party I’m having. The same is true – and even more important - when I’m investing in more expensive purchases; more often than not, I rely on an expert for help. While the Do It Yourself (DIY) approach is very rewarding as a learning and creative experience, it has its limitations.

I’m oversimplifying here, but the same goes for IT. IT organizations are being overwhelmed by the complexity of too many products, too many tools and the tsunami of social, mobile, cloud and big data growth. According to ESG, while 46% of organizations currently leverage the DIY method for virtualization/private cloud builds, just 28% indicate that this is their preferred method of deployment. 64% indicated that Integrated Computing Platforms such as Reference Architectures and pre-configured solutions were their organizations’ favored procurement strategy. Converged Systems are the answer.

Since 2009 when we first announced HP Converged Infrastructure, HP has delivered the most modern portfolio of Servers, Storage and Networking offerings, as well as the new infrastructure management architecture built for convergence, HP OneView. We are the expert you can trust because we have the system building blocks designed from the ground up for convergence that go into every HP Converged System. So here’s our advice on what to look for when you’re considering integrated systems.

  • Look for systems based on a modern architecture designed from the ground up for convergence.
  • Look for systems that can integrate with your existing infrastructure so you don’t have to rip and replace.
  • Look for systems that are optimized around workloads including virtualization, cloud and big data.
  • Look for systems that provide the reliability you need, that meet enterprise-grade requirements.
  • Look for systems with proactive problem prevention and automated 24x7 monitoring.

These system building blocks constitute complete, integrated systems and will take the DIY guess work out of technology integration. Find out more about HP Converged Systems.
