Incremental Backups on Linux Client - HPDP 6.20 Client

Hi we have a linux client (CentOS 5x) and i have this problem.

I sincronize files between our server A  to our server B with robocopy and make incremental backups on server B.

But if the file that was sincronized have a "old date" the HPDP not backup the file !!!

Check this sample:

ls -al on server B

-rwxr--r--  1 smbguest smbguest 2379004 Feb 22  2010 espaco publico Af01.pdf
-rwxr--r--  1 smbguest smbguest       0 Apr  7 19:35 lixo2.txt

ls -alc on server B

-rwxr--r--  1 smbguest smbguest 2379004 Apr  7 18:53 espaco publico Af01.pdf
-rwxr--r--  1 smbguest smbguest       0 Apr  7 19:35 lixo2.txt

Like you can see if i make a ls -alc we can see that the modification date is changed for the "espaco publico Af01.pdf"

How can i say to our DP to make a backup os this type of files

Re: Incremental Backups on Linux Client - HPDP 6.20 Client

You could try to enable "enhanced incremental backup" for the backup job. This will ignore the file attributes and use a small SQLlite database on the client to determine if a file needs to be backed up or not. Remember to run a full backup before enhanced incremental can do their work as expected.

Even if I think that robocopy job could be adjusted to change this behavior. Let me know how it goes.

Re: Incremental Backups on Linux Client - HPDP 6.20 Client

Hi Sebastien,

i don't like change, through robocopy, the true file date.

I don't understand why DP not backup the file, because it's new for DataProtector !!!!!! it nevers backup them why dataprotector ignore them ?

it's any option or something that makes DP ignore these type of files ?

For example: Files that are one year older that DP server time.

I will try enable "enhanced incremental backup" and test again.

Hi Sebastia,

i try now with "enhanced incremental backup" and now DP works fine. The problem is now i have to make a FULL on my jobs. (13TB to backup !!!!)

Ok, but you're doing regular fulls anyway, aren't you? Otherwise the restore chain would be a mess. If you want to do less fulls, you might consider incr1 aka differential since this will not blow up the restore chain.

Re: Incremental Backups on Linux Client - HPDP 6.20 Client

Hi Sebastian,

We have 10 jobs backup to the same linux client.

When you say that if we use "enhanced incremental backup"  the job use a small sqllite database, this database is for each job backup right ?

Do you know if the backup job becomes faster or slow with this kind of feature?

Thanks.

Re: Incremental Backups on Linux Client - HPDP 6.20 Client

Enhanced incremental backups are expected to be slower than regular backups since the additional work on the client system. But this feature has been optimized during the last years and become reliable and fast. The database is generated and stored on per client basis on the client. Refer to the online help for more details on where the database is stored and how it behaves. I think you could use it without any worries.
