Re: predefined lists

Actually there is another forum the Omniback folks are watching...'Openview applications.'

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/CategoryHome/1,1147,163,00.html

You have a few tools available to you to control which tape is used.

You can use a pre-allocation list. You can change the behaviour a little bit further using STRICT or LOOSE and APPENDABLE, NON-APPENDABLE, APPEND INCREMENTALS ONLY.

You can also use POOLS to limit which tapes are used.

Omniback does not manage on the basis of SLOTS. Slot 1 may be Tuesday's tape as far as you are concerned...but when Omniback loads the tape it reads the tape header to figure out which tape it just loaded.

By the way - when you move tapes physically, it is important to re-SCAN the slots so that Omniback can update its internal list (database) of which tapes are available.

Re: predefined lists

When you set up a backup job - you choose which tape drive you wish to use.

You can also select 'options for tape device' and choose a pool or add a tape (order of usage) allocation list.

You use the devices and media area (pools) to select the media allocation policy (loose/strict) and media usage policy (appendable/incremental/non-appendable)

Good Luck.

Re: predefined lists

I am sorry - the GUI for NT is a little different...

In the back up specification, go to the destination tab - highlight your tape drive.

You should now be able to click on the properties button...

Re: predefined lists

Try to initialize tapes in the order you want them to be used. The allocation order of the media pool are based on the order you initialize them. You can pre-allocate by slot in OmniBack (which will be a nice feature.)

Re: predefined lists

Oops. I mean you CAN'T pre-allocate by slot.

Re: predefined lists

Actually, allocation rules are fairly complex, your best bet is to watch the behaviour within your pools - not rely on any single rule of thumb.

Here is a FAQ that covers allocation order...
