HP announces innovations in HPC and storage

DiscoverInsider on ‎06-09-2014 05:25 PM

The accelerating pace of change requires a new style of IT. The converging trends in cloud, Big Data, security, and mobility are affecting how we deliver and consume technology. These trends are so large and encompassing, that enterprises really have no choice but to adapt, or be left behind. IT service delivery needs to be measured in minutes, not weeks, requiring technology that is even more agile, efficient, and simple than ever before.

On a daily basis, the global population generates more than 200 million Tweets. We post one billion pieces of content to Facebook. Add in the data created by cameras, sensors, GPS devices, and transaction systems, and we're talking unfathomable amounts of data. Wal-Mart alone processes more than one million transactions every hour, translating to more than 2.5EB of data. Analysts estimate that by 2020, we'll be swimming in 40 trillion gigabytes of data. A population of 8 billion people will be using 30 billion devices and 10 million mobile apps. Enterprises must take steps now to prepare for what's coming.

Today at HP Discover 2014 in Las Vegas, HP announced some major innovations to its workload-optimized portfolio, particularly around HP's strategy and point of view on high performance computing (HPC) and hyperscale.

Introducing HP Apollo: redefining supercomputing

Considering the demands enterprises are facing, the need to achieve high compute performance at low costs is a given. Knowing this, HP has been developing two new systems to meet this need.

The HP Apollo 6000 System: HP designed this platform for scalability and efficiency at rack-scale. The Apollo 6000 delivers four times better performance per dollar per watt than competing blades, while using 60 percent less floor space. The Apollo 6000 provides the flexibility to tailor precisely to meet the needs of your workloads. The first available server tray, the ProLiant XL220a is a great fit for single-threaded applications (more options coming soon). The system has up to 160 x 1P servers/48U rack, and is fueled by a unique external power shelf, dynamically allocating power to help maximize rack-level energy efficiency while providing the right amount of redundancy for your business.

The HP Apollo 8000 System: This system is redefining data center energy recycling as the industry’s only efficient liquid cooling system, without the risk.

Another major announcement today at HP Discover involved two major innovations in storage. With these announcements, HP declares war on fragmented complexity, and helping customers accelerate the transition to a next-generation IT infrastructure while maintaining business continuity and simplicity with enhanced offerings that provide ease of management from data creation throughout the life cycle:

  • The all-flash HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450 Storage array delivers flash storage at under $2 per usable gigabyte via inline deduplication without compromising performance or guaranteed 99.9999 percent data availability.(3)
  • New backup, recovery and archive (BURA) solutions, including enhancements to the HP StoreOnce Backup family. These offerings eliminate the requirement to manage isolated single node backup targets, enabling customers to protect increasing volumes of data while simplifying data management.
