D2D4112 Replication and Deduplication impact by doing only full backups

I need advice from the experts on the following:- Only full backups are required and the configured VTL media has to be recycled once in a while when there is no more space to write data " that is all vtl media are full". How will this impact the deduplication and replication to the DR site when the media is recycled and full backups are restarted? Is there a recomended solution for this scenario " using Data Protector 6.0-- Unix Cell manager"?

Hi Jose,

I strongly suggest you read the "D2D Best Practices for VTL NAS and Replication Implementations" document which can be found here:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/CoreRedirect.jsp?redirectReason=DocIndexPDF&prodSeriesId=3896393&targetPage=http%3A%2F%2Fbizsupport1.austin.hp.com%2Fbc%2Fdocs%2Fsupport%2FSupportManual%2Fc02511912%2Fc02511912.pdf

This contains lots of useful information on how to get the best performance and deduplication ratio from your D2D backup system.

In your specific case I would recommend that you:

1. Create a specific retention requirement for your business, rather than overwriting only when all cartridges are full.

2. Do not append data to cartridges, i.e. make media non-appendable.

When the retention period expires media with backups on will be overwritten, so in the steady state your dedupe ratio will effectively stabilise to a fairly static level as you will always have the same amount of full backups. This creates a predictable and managable configuration.

Best Regards

Dan
