Backup External HDD causes huge delay in Booting PC

I have an aging HP Pavillion mod a6442a running Windows 7 Ultimate. It works well except that when the external HDD that I use for Windows Backup is attached the PC takes 4.5 mins to get past the blue 'hp invent' screen, while when it's not connected it takes only 8 secs.  The BIOS boot order is HDD - HDD - CD-ROM.   Can someone suggest a fix to deal with the delay in booting with the external HDD attached.
