A New Style of IT is securely emerging in government clouds

Nadhan on ‎08-28-2013 04:14 PM

Civilian agencies, the intelligence community, DoD, and their systems integrators are looking to capitalize on opportunities for efficiencies, reduced costs, and competitive advantage. So says the abstract for “1286 - HP's vision, strategy, and best practices for private, public, and cloud brokering in US federal IT environments,” a session by Henry Fleischmann, Chief Technologist for Federal Cloud Solutions, HP at HP Protect 2013. This session details the cloud journeys taken by enterprises, calling out its application, architecture, and the evolution and deployment of services. Moreover, the session also addresses the shift from a product-centric approach toward a service-centric private and hybrid cloud model. A New Style of IT is emerging in government-based cloud computing.

Let’s see how these aspects manifest themselves to crystallize the New Style of IT.

1. Application: There is a right way to transform to the world of cloud computing – with an applications transformation strategy that enables business functions that matter. The decision to transform to the Cloud is part of a journey that transforms the landscape of applications to the cloudscape of services.

2. Architecture: There are multiple types of cloud environments that could apply to the applications landscape. It is a convergence of multiple cloud environments that best address the enterprise business objectives. A common reference architecture that is agnostic, but adaptable to the different cloud environments is essential.

3. SOA: SOA provides the foundational principles of cloud computing. Therefore, there are significant synergies to be realized by extending the existing fabric of web services across the cloud computing environments.

4. Deployment: The inherent characteristics of the cloud computing environment serve as a catalyst for automating continuous delivery of application components from development through operations.

5. Shift: “The shift from servers to services: Charting your future in the cloud era,” is one of the sessions in the Cloud and Automation track of the HP Power to Change virtual event. I am going to be interviewed in this session where I plan on highlighting how the Cloud is driving enterprises to be more service centric.

There are some other aspects that come to mind in addition to the ones above. For example,

6. Security: “Cloud computing introduces additional challenges to the security paradigm,” says Steve Lazerowich, a security solution leader within the U.S. Public Sector practice for HP Enterprise Services. Guess who is responsible for cloud security? When working with a myriad network of service providers, it is important that enterprises ensure that the solution overall is in alignment with the information security standards for the extended enterprises.

7. Governance: Given the presence of a wide array of service providers and the ability to easily procure services, CIOs need to create a world of co-opetition rather than competition, while exercising governance in the Cloud.

How about you? What aspects come to your mind as you consider the nuances of the Cloud environments in the federal sector? Are you planning on attending this session at HP Protect – the 9th Annual HP Security User Conference? Please let me know.
