Discover the Wi-Fi experience that matters to your consumers

So, as I am about to board my four-hour flight, I see the airline proudly calling out the availability of in-flight Wi-Fi. And I think, “Yeah right! I’ll believe that when I experience it.” After the usual take-off procedures, I connect up and am pleasantly surprised at the reasonably economic all-day rate. And then I think to myself, “You get what you pay for,” anticipating breaks in the overall experience. But I’m glad to share that my experience has been very positive, and in many respects much better than some of my experiences when on land. The airline must be doing something right when it comes to ensuring effective wireless connectivity for its customers.

In today's consumer-driven world, connectivity matters. Perhaps, connectivity may very well be the differentiator for airlines in a world where information needs to be served Business Class.

My experience leads me to wonder what measures the airline could have taken to ensure this positive experience overall. Interestingly enough, I come across this post on Improving the Wi-Fi experience while avoiding interference. by Martine Velkeniers from HP Networking. Interference was the very reason why airlines did not provide Wi-Fi for decades, causing frequent travelers like myself to have mixed feelings about that period of time when you are cut off from the rest of the world. (Even though I did welcome those breaks on some occasions!)

But then, we are in a world driven by the New Style of IT, where enterprises must do what it takes to address what customers want. And what can they do to improve the Wi-Fi experience? This article suggests switching to the 5Ghz band from the 2.4GHz band for starters.

Traditionally IT has been something that was forced on people, now people are demanding it and a customer centric focus is appearing around the needs / wants of the consumer. It won't be long before we all expect WiFi on areoplanes and are surprised if we don't get it!

Fully agree, Lewis.  Which is why Enterprises must go social to continously track what their customers want.
