Meet the innovators

Kieran McCorry, Strategist, Applied Innovation, and Distinguished Technologist, HP Enterprise Services

RDP_20140122_9325 flat CC.pngKieran McCorry is a strategist in the HP Enterprise Services Office of the CTO where he leads development of new service offerings based on innovative and disruptive technologies. He is co-inventor of HP In Context Analytics, a robust collaboration tool that analyzes online conversations and displays relevant documents as they're being discussed. Kieran is an author and frequent conference speaker. He holds multiple patents and degrees in computer science, law, and computer governance. When not working, he can be found cycling up mountains and/or listening to Neil Young.

In preparation for HP Discover 2014 in Las Vegas, June 10 – 13, we  asked Kieran a few questions about HP In Context Analytics and how it can make employees more productive.

How does In Context Analytics deliver relevant information in real-time? Is it key word-based?

We don’t specifically look at individual key words; we look at the conversation as a whole. Then we use an analytic service that processes the meaning behind elements of the conversation, and we find the relevant content. The notion of context is providing information that’s contextually relevant to the conversation you’re having at the moment.

Can you give us an example of how it might work?

Our primary focus is on empowering the workplace, making it more productive. What we’re interested in is individuals having online conversations where there’s a need to find a specific piece of information. From the exchanges in the conversation we can identify the context. For example, if I were a marketing person having a conversation about a product, the system would be able to identify information that’s relevant to me based on the context of me working in the marketing department. So we would return results more relevant to a marketer, rather than, say, a technologist.

Is the process completely automated?

Yes. It’s automated in the sense that we understand what you’re communicating about, we find relevant information, and we present it to you. It’s delivered as a window extension of whatever program you’ve got running at the time. It’s simply a matter of clicking on it. As the system develops, it will start inferring. As it gets to know you as an individual within the organization, it will infer.

How will the system evolve?

It works via text messages or within a chat service. When we release the voice-based functionality, it will work for participants dialed into a conference call. The In Context Analytics technology will run on a device—a PC or a tablet. It will listen in to the audio stream and present relevant information based on what is being said by the participants within the conference call.

Really, where we aim to bring this in a relatively short time frame, is listening in to a face-to-face voice conversation and presenting information that’s relevant during that conversation. You can envision it running on a smartphone. So, in that same way, it could listen to a face-to-face conversation, perform the analytics, and retrieve information that is relevant to what is being discussed.

Meet Kieran and see HP In Context Analytics in action at HP Discover. Register today for the Innovation Theater demonstration.

Thursday, June 12, 12:00 PM - 12:20 PM

During text and voice conversations, In Context Analytics understands what you’re discussing and displays relevant, complementary content in real time on your screen. Did someone mention last quarter’s sales report? No need to search for it—because it’s already on the screen. In Context Analytics provides the information you need, exactly when you need it. Not only can In Context Analytics find information in places you can’t easily access, but it can also find information you didn’t know existed. Join us at this session to find out how your organization can put In Context Analytics to work.

Seats for this session will be on a 'first come, first served' basis on the day. Adding this session to your schedule does not guarantee you a seat in the session.
