This webpage is not available

Ok, one more sad joke for today....

"This webpage is not available." is what I get slightly more that 1/2 the times I am (forced) to login.

3/4 of those occurences a web page refresh (F5)  'fixes it'.

Example detail (to facitilate future searches) ...

" The webpage at http://h30499.www3.hp.com/hpeb/hp_sso?action=login&hpappid=LITHIUM-2&referer=http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Community-Feedback-Suggestions/Subject-too-narrow/td-p/5297985&lang=EN&cc=EN might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. "

This is possibly triggered by too high a sign in rate for the server to handle.

1) That would be rather lame huh, for a server company :-(

2) It will self-regulate: we can just wait for more potential user to walk away in disgust.

3) Maybe we could reduce the rate by lengthening the login - timeout period ?

My vote is for #3. Instead of an hour or whatever it is today, increase it to for example a month?

In a pinch I'll settle for a week, and would even accept a day or even 12 hours for that timeout.

What is magic about 'an hour' anyway?

- Security by obscurity?

For security purposes the first minute after I 'walk away' surely is the most vulnerable,

and i am sure I am not the only one for whom the webbrowser remembers the username+password?!

- Freeing up server resources?

Please investigate the resources consumption of performing a login versus maintaining a context.

I suspect that 1 additional login is more costly that staying logged in 'for ever'.

- Making a ignorant management happy?

Priceless.

Grins,

Hein

I never said it was.  I have a workaround if you're using Firefox - that's why I asked.

I don't use that but I was thinking of suggesting it.  But wouldn't it be trivial to login again, except that it won't?  :-)

But this login problem is a nightmare, I have to give up on firefox and use chrome, when the login server gets tired.  :-(

(Your post seems to have an excessive amount of whitespace at the end.  Should we complain that the forum doesn't automatically strip it?)

Well not total congratulations but JRF mentions that you made out like a bandit here:

Here's one: "liking it much better than the old forum"

That URL says it is fixed last week and it was.
