HP-UX License for HP Visualize C3600

Hi,

I buyed a HP Visualize C3600 on eBay (for personal use) and installed linux on it.

Now I want to try out HP-UX, but I'm not sure about the licensing.

I have done much research and it gave me the following possibilities:

I have to buy two licenses (one CPU and one base), which would cost ~3000 USD

The license is included in the system

The license for the HP-UX version it was selled with is included

It is free for private(non-commercial) useage

I also heard about the "Hardware ID", which is used for licensing. Is it possible to get a list of licenses with it? Is it possible to get the Hardware ID on linux (and if so, how?).

I really searched a long time, but I couldn't find answers. Sorry for my bad English and thanks for every answer :)

Re: HP-UX License for HP Visualize C3600

Christian,

To install HP-UX you will need the cd media or DVD, you are going to need a license for it.
if you have a part # for the license or having any troubles with it, please refer to this page:

http://licensing.hp.com/welcome.slm

If you do not have a license and need to buy one, I recommend you to go to www.hp.com and get the phone # for the sales people and they will get you going.

Regards,

Jaime.

Re: HP-UX License for HP Visualize C3600

Hi,

I'm quite sure you have to buy 'only' one license.
I've not yet heard that you must not buy it at ebay, too.
In general the license is bought and sold with the hardware, but you should get a license paper, too, to have this license officially. Did you buy the ws without installed os (HP-UX) or did you do an os installation over the current os?
The (true) problem you will have - you need the cd's to install HP-UX. These you must get from 'anywhere' - ebay, HP, reseller, friend.
The license is not combined with a hardware-id.
You get the id in HP-UX with'lanscan' - with linux you have to search for the right command.

This seems to imply that you can receive 11.11 media for free:

It would be worth a try, anyway.

Re: HP-UX License for HP Visualize C3600

Pete Randall,

I know about this, but don't I still need a license?

V. Nyga,

HP-UX was installed and I did an installation over it.

The is a Lan-ID on the chassis. Is it that? Is it useable to get information

This seems to be a free license to me, but I'm not sure if it's this I need:

Re: HP-UX License for HP Visualize C3600

Quoting from the page you referenced, Christian:

"If you do not have a valid license to use HP-UX 11i, either because you did not have a support contract or because you purchased a used system through a third-party broker, please go to B9089AC, the HP-UX 11i OE Per-Processor License, purchased separately from system. "

And, quoting from the B9089AC page:

http://h20293.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=B9089AC

"Purchase this product when you do not have a valid license-to-use HP-UX 11i, either because you did not have a support contract or because you purchased a used system through a third-party broker."

Re: HP-UX License for HP Visualize C3600

Hi again,

you need a media kit, so the best solution is Pete's first link - see also all listed software from HP:
http://h20293.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductsList.do?category=OE

As said, the license 'was sold' with the hardware, so I believe you can use HP-UX (also you probably didn't get the license paper). You should try to get the media kit.

It would have been better to install linux on a different disk ... it could be expensive to get the cd's you need.

You don't need the lan-id for HP-UX!
It should look like this (maybe without 0x at the beginning) 0x001083123456.

Re: HP-UX License for HP Visualize C3600

So the question is: Do I have a valid license-to-use HP-UX?

I have no paper, but I have a workstation.

Sorry, if I'm too stupid, but I want a clear answer and don't do something illegal.

Re: HP-UX License for HP Visualize C3600

Hi again,

ask the ebay seller if he has the paper.
Else you should contact HP Austria.

Have fun with HP-UX
