Life after UNIX: Linux, Windows 2000, or more UNIX?

In the age of the Internet, which operating system will rule?

hp-ux, solaris and nt will be predominant os'es in my opinion...linux will come
far, and cause merging of the various unixen, but will be 4-6 years before it
gains data center mind share.

hard to predict, each os have different usage and strength.

linux will become popular os when it is free.

I think the flexible LINUX will win the battle considering the numerous
server-centric Inter/Intranet world. We used to modify even the most stubborn
MVS code before IBM announced the "Object Code Only" nonsense. AT the same
token UNIX kernel modification was done in early days to fit or make
"Lean-and-Mean" unix system. The filrewalls. IP as well as transaction
security requirement mandates highly customized platform. We need a flexible
operating system to make fit into my world rather than the crappy NT shoved to
my lap and we have to make it work fiddling with the NT registry to run better,
What a joke !!!.
We are using NT as a specializom server and prototyping platform for a new
apps.

In a world where everything seems to have it's place, it's becoming
increasingly harder to say that one OS is better than another OS. I don't
think that there will be any 1 OS that will rule the world. I would LIKE to
see *NIX systems run the planet and say "buhh-bye" to NT/2000 systems... but
the fact is, everything has a place.

Anybody hear about "Pink" (IBM and Apple). Apparently it's going to be up
there. Check out WIRED for more info.

Until Microsoft stops the memory leaks, assorted "blue screens of death" and
allows their applications to utilize more memory, UNIX will remain the OS of
choice for me.

That's a thorny one: but even UNIX purists will admit that it's
far easier for Windows to gain acceptance than UNIX, as most
of the "IT challenged" people out there in the Web Universe will
not happily spend a week or more getting LINUX up and running
on their obscure Intel-based Taiwanese PC: rather get the Win
CD, click "Start", "Run...","setup.exe".......
And that's what UNIX will have to mature to, if it wants to
become the desktop OS of choice: a self extracting, self scanning, self
configuring OS. Granted, I haven't played with
the latest version of LINUX, but I have a lot of experience in
the way SCO, HP, and SUN think, and they are all geared
towards the Enterprise or Corporate administrator, who has
access to support and maintenance personnel. So, in my guts, I
feel that by 2001, Windows will still be ahead...

Depends on what you mean by "rule".
Those with Micro$oft will think they
are in control, but those with Linux
know who really has the power. Check the
stats on how many internet servers are
running UNIX/Linux and apache web servers.
ALSO... When it comes to security vulnerabilities
is there even a comparison. Look up Denial of
Service against Windows boxes and then against
UNIX boxes. You will see what I mean.

Re: Life after UNIX: Linux, Windows 2000, or more UNIX?

MPE will still be around and will still be running those systems that can't
afford the downtime and maintenance time other OS' require. Since it is so
reliable, MPE doesn't get a lot of publicity lately but new system sales of the
HP3000 are way up. The reason MPE will still be around is because it's like
the Energizer Bunny. It just keeps going, and going, and going...
