Migrating a VPAR from RX8640 to Blade server BL860c

Hi,

We have a 6 VPAR running on a RX8640 server.  We are planning to migrate one VPAR to a standalone BL860c. This VPAR is booting from SAN and running HPUX11.31.

Can someone explain in details about the steps we need to carryout inorder to migrate this VPAR into the blade and still using the same SAn disks?

Appreciate your inputs and help

Thanks in Advance

Re: Migrating a VPAR from RX8640 to Blade server BL860c

You can use Ignite-UX to clone RX8640 VPAR to new BL680C.

1. Connect BL860C to SAN and create storage for OS

2. Use Ignite-UX to create OS archive of RX8640 VPAR

3. Configure SAN (zoning and storage security) for BL680C to have access to same storage assigned to RX8640 VPAR

4. Recover and install OS using RX8640 VPAR Ignite-UX archive, adjusting swap space for BL680C's memory

5. Unmount filesystems and de-activate RX8640 VPAR Volume Groups

6. On BL680C, import Volume groups and mount filesystems

It would be wise to have an actual step-by-step plan, and also develop a backout plan just in case. Depending upon the amount of downtime, application, and hardware configuration for the migration; these are some of the factors that may affect your overall plan.

Re: Migrating a VPAR from RX8640 to Blade server BL860c

Thanks Henry for the reply

Can you please eloborate little more to my questions below on your reply?

1. Connect BL860C to SAN and create storage for OS - Is this mean to create SAN boot disks?

2. Use Ignite-UX to create OS archive of RX8640 VPAR - Understood

3. Configure SAN (zoning and storage security) for BL680C to have access to same storage assigned to RX8640 VPAR - Is this mean to do the zoning from BL860c to the same LUNS which is currently allocated to RX8640?

4. Recover and install OS using RX8640 VPAR Ignite-UX archive, adjusting swap space for BL680C's memory - Will it be to a new SAN boot disk?

5. Unmount filesystems and de-activate RX8640 VPAR Volume Groups - understood

6. On BL680C, import Volume groups and mount filesystems - Understood

Re: Migrating a VPAR from RX8640 to Blade server BL860c

Can you please eloborate little more to my questions below on your reply?

1. Connect BL860C to SAN and create storage for OS - Is this mean to create SAN boot disks?

-> Yes, I meant to allocate storage space to be used as the boot disk for BL680C

3. Configure SAN (zoning and storage security) for BL680C to have access to same storage assigned to RX8640 VPAR - Is this mean to do the zoning from BL860c to the same LUNS which is currently allocated to RX8640?

-> Yes, configure zoning on the FC switches you're using so that the BL860C will have access to the same LUNs assigned to the RX8640 VPAR. What type of storage do you have? Depending upon the type of storage, you will also have to setup LUN security for the BL680C to have access to those LUNs.

4. Recover and install OS using RX8640 VPAR Ignite-UX archive, adjusting swap space for BL680C's memory - Will it be to a new SAN boot disk?

--> Yes, you will be using the new LUN(s) you created in step 1.
