Building a Private Cloud in Zero to 90 Days

Chris Purcell on ‎05-26-2011 07:30 AM

If you are getting a chance to go to HP Discover, here’s an interesting session to look out for. It 's about a company called FICO that successfully implemented a 90 day transition into the Cloud using HP CloudSystem Matrix.

FICO’s business problem was comprised of a combination of the following:

  • Requesting IT services was time and labor intensive
  • Proliferation of virtual servers (1,000+)
  • No existing service catalog
  • Their business units did not understand the cost drivers of “IT”
  • Provisioning infrastructure required multiple high cost resources
  • Silo approach to IT organization (server, network, storage)

These are not uncommon problems facing many companies and could be summarized very simply by stating FICO’s business was outpacing their IT and the IT team had to find ways to keep up.

FICO took an aggressive approach to overcome these issues and after engaging with HP, became one of the first US companies to be enabled with the HP CloudSystem Matrix. This is a Private Cloud solution which started with HP CloudStart, a predefined solution that delivers a pre-integrated, pre-architected cloud as a fixed price offering. The HP CloudSystem Matrix solution is based on proven HW technology that has been used by FICO for several years. But the “Cloud” components were new and came in the form of a Self Service Portal, Billing Manager and Insight Orchestration.

FICO is planning additional functionality in the upcoming months, which they will easily enabled because everything about the CloudSystem solution is based upon HP’s Converged Infrastructure. (Using a Converged Infrastructure approach provides an architectural blueprint that eliminates silos and integrates technologies (e.g. servers, storage and network) into shared pools of interoperable resources – all managed through a common management platform and all based on standards and customer choice.)

And after 90 days, what did FICO accomplish? As you can expect that they learnt a significant amount about how to reengineer their IT to accommodate a new cloud perspective within their business. But most importantly they successfully reduced the time it took to deliver services from weeks/months to hours.

If you are at HP Discover and are interested in the Cloud, session # 4822 is a must see for you. Tom Grahek, FICO’s VP if IT provides some very relevant insights on their cloud implementation and lessons learnt along the way. great story.   Whats interesting though is cloud computing is not something new.   Its been around for a very long time - just recently though it has become the buzz around the industry.   PC's, notebooks, phones are solely devices today to interact with the data center (cloud).   Its an exciting time we live in.
