Case Study: Ricoh Transitions to Cloud Backup with HP Helion

‎07-10-2014 10:18 AM - edited ‎10-11-2015 02:07 PM

Ricoh is a global brand specializing in printers, industrial products and digital cameras; recognized in 2012 as a Top 100 Global Innovator. The supporting IT environment exists in four regions – Japan, Americas, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, meeting the needs of approximately 110,000 users every day.

PROBLEM

As Ricoh expanded its global infrastructure they ended up having a variety of backup solutions requiring various solution experts as well as methodologies from remote location storage to global backup infrastructure. Ricoh needed a reliable, secure, inexpensive single cloud-based solution.

SOLUTION

Ricoh chose HP Helion Public Cloud with our OpenStack Object Storage solution as their global backup mechanism leveraging the multi-format storage capability. With cost a concern, Ricoh was able to leverage existing internet connections as the backup pathway avoiding the need for dedicated physical lines.

In addition, HP brought in Riverbed, a HP Helion storage partner, and their SteelStore solution offering de-duplication and encryption within the data center before backup into the cloud. This addition reduced storage needs by 90%.

WHY HP HELION?

“We judged the effectiveness of HP Cloud Object Storage in a real operational environment, so we needed to be able to limit initial investment costs,” notes Toshiyuki Miyakoshi, Senior Specialist, Ricoh.
