Docker, OpenStack, and HP Cloud—looking to the future

With so much focus on the OpenStack project here at HP, we (along with other companies as well) sometimes forget that other important open source efforts are also underway. In this blog, I want to present one such open source project that is quickly gaining momentum with cloud and virtualization technologists: Docker.

From the website, “Docker is an open source project to easily create lightweight, portable, self-sufficient containers from any application. The same container that a developer builds and tests on a laptop can run at scale, in production, on VMs, bare metal, OpenStack clusters, public clouds and more. “

Here are some high-level reasons for the interest in Docker:

  • Easy to place an application and its associated resources into a container for deployment
  • Build the container once, run anywhere
  • Configure the container once,  run anything
  • Small footprint in terms of disk and memory making it possible to far more containers than VMs
  • Perfectly suited for PaaS and SaaS
  • Security benefits because there is no VM or associated OS with only the application in question
  • Public and private image repositories making available enumerable choices for users

The OpenStack community is currently working with Docker to ensure that the technologies are integrated with the  OpenStack Blueprint for Docker.  With the release of Havana, a Docker driver has been available for developers to access along with instructions to install and configure for the DevStack environment.

I encourage technologists not familiar with Docker to investigate further and if time permits, take part in the Docker integration with OpenStack. HP is committing resources to this effort and looks forward to offering our customers this beneficial solution for our cloud.
