HP 9000 T600 Rebuild - Need Help!!!

Hi all,

This is the first time I have posted on the site so please excuse if this question is not in the right place.  We have a client that has a number of very old servers one being a HP 9000 T600.  Due to a hardware issue we have to re-install the server with no documentaiton on what the configuration needs to be or any installation guides.  There are a number of HP-UX 10.02products that need to be installed but we have no idea where to get them from or how to install.  The list below:

B2491A_APZ                    B.10.20        MirrorDisk/UX
B3919CA_AGL                   B.10.20        HP-UX 8-User License
B3920CA                       B.10.20        HP-UX Media Kit (Reference Only. See Description)
B6232AA                       B.10.20.HWE    HP-UX 10.20 Hardware Extensions

HPUXEngCR800                  B.10.20        English HP-UX CDE Runtime Environment
OnlineDiag                    B.10.20.05     HPUX 10.0 Support Tools Bundle

Has anyone got any idea where these could be obtained, in particualar MirrorDisk/UX

Any help would be awesome.

Thanks

Chris

I think you're out of luck, 10.20 hasn't been supported for years.

And MirrorDisk/UX needs a license which will be hard to get.

Re: HP 9000 T600 Rebuild - Need Help!!!

Sorry another question that I don't think has a solution.  From the reading I have been doing it looks like you need the

Codeword , customer identifier , Certificate ID , software.  We have another HP 9000 T600 that we are now looking to transfer the license from however, the client has no purchasing information or license information.

Is there anyway to 'extract' this information from the server?

Thanks

Re: HP 9000 T600 Rebuild - Need Help!!!

The T600 is really old, maybe 20 years now?

Usually the license is based on the machine ID, so you cannot transfer it to a different machine (this makes sense for a license).

You should talk to HP support if they can help you.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

The answers given are accurate, you cant get the Mirrordisk/UX for 10.20 anymore. An easy work around the Mirrordisk/UX with 10.20 is do your raid/mirroring with hardware instead of software. Not sure what disk arrays your using but if you get an HP Model 12H or Model 10 or 20 array, its got that capability built into the hardware so there is no need for the mirroring software.

We sell both arrays and the disks. Let me know if you want any further explanation on them.

Re: HP 9000 T600 Rebuild - Need Help!!!

Mirror Disk and some of the other items listed were installed from the Applications CDs for HP-UX 10.20.  The products like Mirror Disk were codeword protected for the particular CDs that they werre installed from.  Each CD set required a different code word.

The code words that were used to install software are stored in the /var/adm/sw/.codewords file.  The code words are NOT tied to a specific server.  So, the /var/adm/sw/.codewords file COULD be copied from one server to another.  The caveat is that you have to know EXACTLY which CD set (March 1999, for example) / CD Part number was used to install the software because the codewords will ONLY work with the particular CD set / part number.

You may have another option:

If you have a similar server (ie. another T600), you could create an Ignite make_tape_recovery tape on that server and then use that tape to recover the dead server.  This would recover everything in VG00, including all installed software.  This is what Ignite/UX was designed for.

Everyone,

Thank you for all your advice it has been very much appreciated.  We now looking at other backup \ mirroring options to give the reslience required.

We did get the codeword in the end put could not get the original media to install.

Re: HP 9000 T600 Rebuild - Need Help!!!

It sounds as if these old servers do not have Ignite backups being performed. With any version of HP-UX, an Ignite backup is mandatory to avoid total loss of the system (and a very costly rebuild, if possible). Since the T600 is gone, this is an ideal time to verify that a regular Ignite backup is being done on every HP-UX server. Using tar or fbackup or a commercial backup tool like Data Protector will not provide a way to recover an unbootable system.  If every machine has a tape drive, then make_tape_recovery is the tool. If not, you'll need to setup one of the HP-UX machines as a network Ignite server.
