We have here a couple of BL495 G5 and G6 servers. One of the G6 has failed and I noticed that the G5 has the same mainboard inside (same spares number). So I took the board from one G5 to repair the G6... no problems so far.
But of course the OA recognises the blade as a G5 now. Just for cosmetic reasons I would like to change that identification to G6, is that possible?
I already tried to change the product ID (PID) in the BIOS but that did not help. Next step would be to update the firmware with a G6 file...
Any other ideas how to do that?
The same problem happens on WS460 blades which share the mainboard with the BL460. Some people say that the ID changes when a graphics card is installed. I tried that but it was still a BL, not a WS.

Re: How to tell a BL495-G5 to be a G6?
For the WS it is a dip switch setting, maybe the same for your blade or the product ID in BIOS?
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: How to tell a BL495-G5 to be a G6?
The Maintenance switch settings look identical on G5 or G6. Setting the part number in BIOS does not change the server type either.
In the Asset Text settings there is a "BL495c-G5" text stored but changing that has no effect on the displayed server type.
Any other ideas?

Re: How to tell a BL495-G5 to be a G6?
HP is using same boards in different server models from time to time. Sometimes the difference are the fan connections, sometimes special dip switch or jumper settings ... If you have both servers, I would just compare all switches (are there more then the maintenance switch?). There must be a difference somewhere, since it is the same part no. for both servers.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

SolutionI solved the problem!
I finally got a Opteron 2435 processor and put it into the blade instead of the 23xx that was instelled. There was no immediate change but after booting windows, it suddenly appeared in the OA as "G6".... woooo!!!
It depends on the type of processor if the blade is recognised as a G5 or a G6.
G5 processors: Opteron 23xx series
G6 processors: Opteron 2435 and 2427 (according to OARS)
In short: no switches, no settings, just the right processor.... (and maybe the bios product number)

Re: How to tell a BL495-G5 to be a G6?
But I remember to read the quickspec of both and found the same processors as supported?
What if you change back the product no. to a G5 server?
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: How to tell a BL495-G5 to be a G6?
Well, according to the OARS database, the G5 has only 23xx Opterons and the G6 has only 24xx.
I will try what happens when I set a G5 part number together with a 24xx Opteron.....

Re: How to tell a BL495-G5 to be a G6?
OK... I tried it...
It seems that the product number in the BIOS has not much effect on the G5/G6 identity.
When I slide in the blade it tells me it is a G5 but after finishing the selftests it switches to G6. No matter which PN I set.
I just have the feeling that the switching is earlier when the G6 PN is stored. Then it switches right after the CPU test.
So if I remove the blade and re-insert it, I first see a G5 and after a minute (or shorter) it changes to G6.

Re: How to tell a BL495-G5 to be a G6?
You are right:
G5 quickspec:
Up to two (2) Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ 2300 series processors
G6 quickspec:
Up to two (2) Six-Core AMD Opteron™ 2400 series processors
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
