Big data that is out of this world

mackey ‎05-13-2014 01:41 PM - edited ‎05-13-2014 01:47 PM

One of the best parts of my job is producing our weekly video series called Discover Performance Weekly.  If you haven’t seen it, please check it out soon.  We feature topics very similar to our digital magazine and this blog.  This week’s show has been my favorite so far.  We were honored to have visualization expert, Kim Arcand (@kimberlykowal) from NASA's Chandra X-ray Center on the show to discuss big data challenges.

We often use the term “data scientist” when talking about the profession, or even task, of analyzing data.  But that term takes on a whole new meaning when you actually sit down to talk to a real scientist who has to make sense of big data in order to accurately represent what can’t be seen with the human eye.

Kim has a very unique perspective on telling a story with big data.  Listen as she shares her approach to conveying complex data sets in a way that is understandable to all audiences.  In this episode, HP Software evangelist and VP of Strategic Marketing, Paul Muller (@xthestreams) and Kim discuss topics like:

- What can science teach the boardroom about big data?

- Adding intelligence, context and transparency to your data

- Anticipating your audience's biases, cultures and predispositions to visual clues

- Importance of narrative to accompany the data

Watch now.
