Gartner, IDC: Charting the CIO’s course for 2014

Alec_Wagner on ‎01-02-2014 06:20 AM

Now that the holiday season is squarely in your rearview mirror, it’s time to look ahead at the year to come. Assessing the IT landscape, of course, is a tradition at this time of year, with pundits and analysts making predictions, drafting top 10 lists and gazing into their crystal balls. Here’s what we’ve heard from two top analyst firms—IDC and Gartner—about what should be on your “CIO crib sheet” for the coming 12 months.

IDC's 'Third Platform': mobile computing, cloud services, big data/analytics and social networking

At the IDC Worldwide ICT Industry Predictions 2014 Web conference last month, Senior VP and Chief Analyst Frank Gens provided an overview of the IT landscape, and crunched some numbers. Worldwide IT spending will grow 5 percent year over year, he noted, to the tune of $2.1 trillion in 2014. “2014 will be all about pitched battles across the IT industries emerging ‘third platform’ for growth and innovation,” Gens said. The “third platform”—built on the technology pillars of mobile computing, cloud services, big data/analytics, and social networking—will grow 15 percent year over year and capture 89 percent of IT spending growth.

In 2014, IDC predicts:

  1. Worldwide IT spending will be driven by third-platform technologies
  2. Emerging markets bounce back and grow 10 percent
  3. Value will migrate up the stack, from IaaS to PaaS
  4. Mobile device growth will see tablets rise 18 percent, smartphones by 12 percent
  5. Cloud spending will surge by 25 percent, reaching over $100 billion
  6. Spending on big data technologies and services will grow 30 percent
  7. Social technologies will become increasingly integrated into enterprise apps
  8. Cloud-dedicated datacenters will drive the market for server, storage, and networking components
  9. Industry-focused platforms will disrupt market leaders
  10. The third platform will continue to expand to the Internet of Things (IoT)

Gartner's 'Nexus of Forces': A convergence of social, mobile, cloud and information

At the Gartner Symposium/ITxpo last fall, Gartner VP and Fellow David Cearley identified similar technologies at play in what Gartner terms “the Nexus of Forces” driving IT in 2014 and beyond. According to Cearley, this “Nexus of Forces”—the convergence of social, mobile, cloud and information—will continue to drive change and create new opportunities. “Over the last few years at Gartner, we’ve been talking about what we call the Nexus of Forces…and it underpins the top 10 strategic technology trends this year, especially cloud and mobile.”

Gartner suggests the following should be top-of-mind for CIOs in the coming year:

  1. Mobile device diversity and management
  2. Mobile apps and applications
  3. The Internet of Everything (IoE)
  4. Hybrid cloud and it as service broker
  5. Cloud/client architecture
  6. The era of personal cloud
  7. Software-defined anything
  8. Web-scale IT
  9. Smart machines
  10. 3-D printing
