HP Discover CIO Summit asks: Is Netflix's cloud strategy leadership or an anomaly?

MylesS on ‎06-21-2013 08:33 AM

breakout in Las Vegas last week, CIOs presented their viewpoints and learned more about the state of cloud strategy at HP IT. Obviously, cloud is a big deal for CIOs—HP IT said that what took them three months to provision now takes just 11 hours! This is how you spell enterprise agility when you think of provisioning development environments in particular.

A major retailer’s IT leader then asked, “Do you believe that we should transfer our existing apps to the cloud? Should we keep them where they are? Or should we just consider cloud as a bursting approach for our existing stuff?” For any of this to work, this IT leader said that three things are needed: auto-scaling, auto-sensing, and auto-balancing. You also must decide what data that you want—and don’t want—in the public cloud. To get ready, however, you need to get your teams and your business customers to think small, medium and large. This is a big cultural change for most IT organizations and their business customers.

The above IT leader continued by saying Netflix, which has transferred everything into the pubic cloud, represents the end point: AWS is managing development and production, and the core of Netflix’s service is streaming large amounts of data. What does this mean for the rest of us? “Most of the folks I talk to are already not going to build another datacenter,” the IT leader commented.

At this point, others in the room asserted that every company will have their own journey to the cloud. At HP, the entire HP website is running in the HP public cloud. At this point, HP IT asserted that the systems of engagement should clearly be in the public cloud. Others asserted that for public cloud options to become commonly used, there must be SLAs and a clear definition of who bears what risks. Regardless of cloud strategy type, the advantages of a cloud strategy were asserted as being: Agility (97 percent reduction in the time to provision), a 60 percent reduction in the meantime to deploy new applications, and a 25 percent reduction in service administrators. These are things that matter!
