Your IT value chain: Want help improving yours? It costs nothing?

MylesS on ‎09-12-2013 11:11 AM

A month ago, I described how the business notion of value chains can be applied to IT management. Viewing IT management as a value chain fundamentally changes how you think about your relationship with business customers. IT is more than a random compilation of machinery, equipment, people and money. IT leaders arrange these technology inputs into business capabilities that either internal or external customers pay money for. By taking a business approach, IT directly establishes itself a major source of a business’s competitive advantage. IT—just like IT’s business peers—has both a primary responsibility to deliver services, and a support responsibility to the business within the IT value chain.

IT creates competitive advantages for business customers by doing three things with increasing effectiveness and efficiency:

IT Value Chain consists of 4 primary activities

As you’ll recall from my first column in this series, the IT value chain consists of four primary activities we call value streams. The Strategy to Portfolio value stream is about the portfolio of capabilities that IT fields for business competitive advantage. The Requirement to Deploy value stream is about how strategic demand is delivered and managed—how closely requirements that are delivered match business needs. The Request to Fulfill value stream is about how to accommodate operational demand—how well IT fulfills requests for services, platforms (PaaS), or infrastructure (IaaS). And lastly, the Detect to Correct value stream focuses on preventing and fixing services according to the service design portion of Requirement to Deploy; in other words, is the right warranty in place, and does IT deliver to these expectations?

So how do you use the IT value streams to maximize what you deliver today?

HP has worked out not only how to connect and optimally run each value stream, but also how to maximize performance across the entire IT value chain with an orchestrated approach that is software, hardware, and even vendoragnostic. If you would like to better understand our unique business perspective of how to improve your IT organization, our experts are here to help. We will review the value stream for better understanding of the end-to-end streams, and demonstrate how to operationalize each value stream to form an effective IT value chain.  We will share:
