Asset Manager's statistics & dashboards: Show the value you deliver to your execs and save your job!

Statistics are easy to create in Asset Manager. Note that Asset Manager provides hundreds of statistics and dashboards OOB... it is good to start on a ne.

The first type is the simple statistic that you create through the user interface... starting this post, I wondered... what would be good to understand about my assets? A useful snapshot? Seeing my assets by status and by asset type, in value, could be good. How many computers are sleeping in my stock? What is my total value of active licenses?

Let's do it.

1) Open the tools / report / statistics menu of the Windows client

2) Choose what type of statistic you want (sector, horizontal bars...), if you want to stack the results, what functional domain you want to associate the statistic to (important in the web client)

3) Pick up the table (amAsset), the primary group by (Assets status), the secondary (Asset type), the filter on the table you want to apply if you don't want to report on all records, the value you want to apply to your series (sum of the costs of your assets for instance). If you set no "Expression", Asset Manager will give the count of the records.

4) Choose if you want to have the statistic result stored: some statistics can be SQL intensive… and there is a way to have Asset Manager automated Process Manager refreshing the staistics nightly for instance

and... after 90 seconds, you are done!

Let's see the result: you can have a quick understanding of the situation and drill down to the list of assets in scope to start a process or understand the details.

Great, in 1.5 minute, you have created a statistic that shows a value to your management... How can you make it accessible?

Asset Manager has Dashboards. Dashboards are actions (Tool / Actions / edit), that are of a "dashboard" type, that allow to aggregate multiple statistics (by default, the max is 6, but you can extend this is the web.xml property of the web tier).

Here is an example of Dashboard (the virtualization dashboard provided OOB in Asset Manager):

The Business Home Pages (Administration / Business Home pages) are specific dashboards that are opened when clicking on the nodes of the navigation tree managed by the Asset Manager's functional domains (Asset Life Cycle / Software Asset Management for instance...). The Business home pages have a specific  "related links" section. Good to know, this section is pure HTML, so, you can make it like you want, point to external resources (pictures, links), format as you wish. The SAM best practice Dashboard section below illustrates this.

What about more complex statistics?

You can actually have Scripted statistics in Asset Manager that can go way beyond what the simple statistics allows to do, using Cypress Basic. For instance: "Show the top 15 SW counters that show the highest cost for compliance" (statistic included in the SAM Corporate Dashboard delivered with the SAM Best practice Package).

Best is for you to have a look to examples provided in Asset Manager. You can also convert the simple statistic I showed above into a script: right click on the statistic, "convert into a script". You can use this intelligent contextual action on statistics that have a grouping and a subgrouping, using fields (and not just links).

This is rather simple, the goal is to build an XML string using loops on the labels (columns) and the values (series) that has the following structure:

<group " & XmlAttribute("name", "label1") & " " & XmlAttribute("filtertable", "amXXX") & " " & XmlAttribute("filter", FilterString" ) & " " & XmlAttribute("value",NumericValue) & " " & XmlAttribute("color", "ColorCode") & "> " & _      <subgroup " & XmlAttribute("name", Label11) & " " & XmlAttribute("filtertable", "amXXX") & " " & XmlAttribute("filter",      strFilter) & " " & XmlAttribute("value", lSerieValue) & "/>

   <subgroup " & XmlAttribute("name", Label12) & " " & XmlAttribute("filtertable", "amXXX") & " " & XmlAttribute("filter", strFilter) & " " & XmlAttribute("value", lSerieValue) & "/>

<group " & XmlAttribute("name", "label2") & " " & XmlAttribute("filtertable", "amXXX") & " " & XmlAttribute("filter", FilterString" ) & " " & XmlAttribute("value",NumericValue) & " " & XmlAttribute("color", "ColorCode") & "> " & _

Some statistics functions are provided with Asset Manager in the script libraries (Administration / script libraries).

The SAM Best practice script library brings for instance provides the Sam4ComLib:

  • SAMStatistic(strCodeCondition As String, strSort As String,  strReplacement As String) As String that shows a series of SW counters in a statistic with the number of license rights, the number of deployements, the compliance (green when compliant, red when incompliant) with the right drill downs. In a matter of seconds, you can build statistics and Dashboards on your own SW counters
  • AmGetMaintDashboard(strBarcode, strProduct, strColor) As String that shows your maintenances to renew for the next 12 months in the context of a SW counter

The Datasys StatLib library provides useful functions as well: LAST12MONTHS(), NEXT12MONTHS(), CURRENTFISCALYEAR()

Now, it is your turn to play, impress, enjoy!
