HP ITSM Insider Dispatch: Service Manager UX Transformation a la Cinderella (Bippity Boppity Boo!)

It is said that UX (the User Experience, for those with acronym phobia) is a simultaneous combination of technology and art.  What the user actually sees when using a web-enabled software application is fated to follow design trends that come and go, just like the world of fashion. But chasing trends blindly is pointless, especially for a mature and complex system with a long history and large-scale user base. Yes, by now you know I am talking about Service Manager. But just because the developers of HP Service Manager hardly do changes overnight doesn’t mean we are not willing to improve and shine, when it’s time.


It doesn’t really matter how much you know about the HP Service Manager Web Client, simply close your eyes for a moment and imagine that we’ve been cast as Cinderella, left wearing a faded and gloomy dress for a while, but now, with the help of our fairy Godmother, excitedly preparing for the fancy ball just around the corner.


First and foremost, Cinderella is certainly worth a brand new gown, created in a popular style called “flat”. Flat design existed long before it became a buzz word. When talking about “flat design” we’re talking about a design that is simplified and leaning more toward the minimal in aesthetic. Either driven by analysis or intuition, flat design is an excellent choice for the fabric that clothes the new HP Service Manager Web Client.  It goes hand in hand with modern web site design and can use background color, scalable type, and flexible images to alter the design into different screen sizes. A little techie aside here, flat design creates fewer images per breakpoint, which can also increase page load speed (which everybody is happy about). Because of all these reasons, the new Web Client will adopt this visual style together with a new set of flattened icons and the HP font as well.


And let’s not forget widgets, which, just like the jewels affixed to Cinderella’s gown, dazzle quite brilliantly on their own.  Our Web Client will have four different UI looks that are consistent, respectively, with the four widget statuses: 1) normal, 2) hover, 3) active and 4) disabled. By the way, if Cinderella wants to change to an entirely new gown midway through the party, we have a new branding mechanism that can make it happen at anytime.


Besides a new gown to wear at the ball, Cinderella needs a sparkling coach and two white horses to take her to the ball. The new SM Web Client will introduce a bunch of cool features to facilitate user interaction and get IT jobs done quickly. Features like 1) a new floating navigation menu and vertical layout to save more working space, 2) a flexible message bar and history box to improve responsiveness, 3) quick jump and auto-complete to enhance the operational efficiency, 4) date picker, 5) quick help, and so on and so forth…


Voila!  A gorgeous Cinderella is ready to meet her Prince at the ball.  Let’s all be quietly anticipating her refreshing and breathtaking entrance! And if, by chance, you see anything missing, please don’t panic, it’s probably just one of her glass slippers.
