2. I auto-discovered several machines that had aliases like "www" etc, and that's what they show up with in the CIM list. Do I have to edit SQL directly to change this?

SolutionThe other solution is to set the servers in your hosts file on your server, but It will resolve names in your own server before to resolve names on the DNS server. The file is in WinNT\System32\Driver\ETC\
By doing this you can assign the name you which with the IP you desire
