SNMP Management Agents
Do you need to have HP SNMP MANAGMENT Agents installed on server in order for SNMP traps to be sent to HPSIM Server?? Or is specifying the Community String and Trap targ on the node you want managed by SIM server enough.
Thanks,

Re: SNMP Management Agents
The HP Agents monitor the hardware and then use SNMP (or WBEM) to send the alert. That's why you set the SNMP Trap Destination to point to the HPSIM Server. HP Agents are installed as part of the PSP.
HPSIM also polls the servers and it's that process that picks up that a server isn't there.

Re: SNMP Management Agents
Are the SNMP agents part of the Compaq insight manager agents that you get on the HP cd that comes with the server?? Or are they an add on?? Currently the manage node I'm testing with has the following version of HP insight agents.
HP Insight Management Agents for Windows Server 2003/2008 x64 Editions 8.60.0.0
Thanks.

Re: SNMP Management Agents
You have 2 choices
1) HP Insight Agents which do come default in the PSP or downloaded individually version 8.60 would be one version and require SNMP Services, trap and security configuration in the SNMP Service Properties or conf file depending on your OS.
2) WBEM Providers which are optional in the PSP and are an alternative to SNMP Agents not requiring SNMP Service rather they use WBEM Services which in Windows is WMI. They notify via Indications which are akin to traps for simple comparison.
So if you are looking for SNMP traps, yes you need the agents to send trap information to the CMS which will have the interpretive MIB's for the HP Servers. If your environment is desiring an alternative to Insight SNMP Agents the Insight WBEM Provider maybe of benefit if supported for your server and os.
