VCA - Version Control Agent Issue

Hi All,

after installation of new version VCA v7.1.1.0 the agent stops working. Last version which is working correctly is v6.3.1.871. Server is running Windows Server 2008 R2 and it has all actual Microsoft updates and patches. Agent was installed as part of 9.1 PSP. When i am checking server applications log I see following error.

Faulting application name: vcagent.exe, version: 7.1.1.0, time stamp: 0x4fd201e0
Faulting module name: OLEAUT32.dll, version: 6.1.7601.17676, time stamp: 0x4e587ee8
Exception code: 0xc0000005
Fault offset: 0x0000000000003a99
Faulting process id: 0x9cc
Faulting application start time: 0x01cd9af59cc71ddb
Faulting application path: C:\hp\hpsmh\data\cgi-bin\vcagent\vcagent.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\OLEAUT32.dll
Report Id: 74cb528d-06e9-11e2-b96a-00237d3c2076

If I try to access page of VCA on address https://localhost:2381/ it show me actually installed driver versions but without connection to repository which is running on Central HPSIM server as you can see in attachment. With older version of VCA its normally working.

When I will try to configure VCA "Change settings" button and filling down repository server and account for access I will receive error

"Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, [no address given] and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log."

Any idea what's going on here?

Thanks in advance for your help

Re: VCA - Version Control Agent Issue

I have had issues with all versions over 7.0.0.900.  Every time a new version has been released, I update a pilot group of servers and none work.  The indicator icon is gone from the SMH under Version Control Agent to indicate versions of agents that are out of date.  When you go to the VCA page, it hangs and never disaplays anything.  Trying to restart the service fails on Stopping and the vcagent.exe process must be killed in order to start it back up with the same result as before with nothing being displayed.  I just came onto the forums to look for answers so I havent searched them all yet, this was the first I found but nice to see I am not the only one with the issue.  I will keep searching but I wonder if HP is aware that the last 3 releases of the VCA don't work.

Attached is the error that eventually shows up.

Re: VCA - Version Control Agent Issue

I've had enough issues with VCA 7 and SIM7 as a whole, that I'd started the think about wipeing it out and going back to 6.3. So far, with any server with VCA at version 7+ updates just won't isntall. They all download from the SIM server, but the log shows "this component failed to load" for almsot all updates. I'm just spinning my wheels here with SIM 7.

Re: VCA - Version Control Agent Issue

I have been having this issue since about vers. 7.x. It appears to be random. I finally opened a case with HP Support and the solution they provided works. I have included it below. It is a lengthy process (takes about 30-40 minutes) but clears up the problem.

Uninstall in order:

1. SMHP

2. IMA

3. VCA

4. SNMP

Install in order:

1. SNMP

2. IMA

3. SMHP

4. VCA

Following versions

IMA

SMHP

VCA

Though, other older version can be used upon reinstalling.

Hope this works for you.

Re: VCA - Version Control Agent Issue

This solution didn't help me and I spent hours trying to make System Mgmt Homepage (SMH) v7.2.0.14 work with Version Control Agent (VCA) v7.2.0.0 & v7.2.2.0 on our Windows 2003 SP2 HPSIM server.

There is something different about the VCA v7.x versions compared to earlier v6.x versions that cause SMH to timeout & display an incomplete user interface. I noted the following in the Logs  »  SMH  »  httpd Error Log:

[Wed Oct 30 21:48:35.706136 2013] [cgi:error] [pid 1532:tid 2784] [client ServerIP:1302] Script timed out before returning headers: hpwbem.cgi, referer: https://ServerName:2381/

[Wed Oct 30 21:44:56.810761 2013] [cgi:error] [pid 1532:tid 2816] [client ServerIP:4677] Script timed out before returning headers: hpwbem.cgi, referer: https://ServerName:2381/

NOTE: This log file may not be enabled by default. If I recall correctly, I may have enabled this during earlier trouble shooting by opening CMD prompt and entering following lines:

CD C:\hp\hpsmh\bin

smhconfig -p true

- SMH service must be restarted in order for this change to become effective

Even though the SMH times out when VCA is running, the VCA UI itself can be loaded if you access it directly (ie. if you need to check/update things):

https://ServerName:2381/vcagent

When the SMH timeouts, the System Model & Data Source fields are also blank in the top section. The SMH will display it's expected user interface if you stop the VCA service however then you can't use the VCA to check/update HP drivers etc.

I checked Settings  »  Select SMH Data Source  »  Select & WBEM was selected. I changed this to SNMP & this triggered the SMH service to restart. Lo & behold and HALLELUJAH... the SMH loads up properly including showing the links to the VCA & VCRM that are both running on this server.

Conclusion: SMH version 7.2.0.14 has some incompatibility running with VCA version 7.2.0.0 or 7.2.2.0 when Data Source is set to WBEM.

In case it's also relevant, HP Insight Management WBEM Providers for Windows Server 2003/2008 v9.2.0.0 are installed on this server.

YMMV, good luck!
