Hello Expert,

Could you please share with me the information in pdf/online/cookbook about ignite.

It's totally new to me and some question

1. Any possibility to install ignite to any unix flavor like AIX/HPUX

2. What is important command for ignite?

Ignite only works on HP-UX.

The two most important are make_net_recovery and make_tape_recovery, which create recovery archives to disk over the network, or to tape respectively.

Hi:

As noted, Ignite and its 'make_tape_recovery' and 'make_net_recovery' components are only for HP-UX.

For AIX you have 'mksysb' and 'nim' (Network Installation Manager) for parallel purposes.

For Solaris, there is 'jumpstart' and with Linux (primarily RedHat) you have 'kickstart'.

Hi (again):

Don't confuse operating system recovery/cloning tools like Ignite, 'mksysb', 'kickstart', etc. with *backup* tools.

For example, Ignite has the ability to include and/or exclude non-vg00 filesystems (or volume groups) but this is *not* intended as a backup mechanism for them.

The whole idea of having a recovery image is to recover a server that has been rendered unusable or to clone a server's image to another.  The aforementioned tools are used, too, in disaster recovery exercises and (forbid) real disaster recoveries.

When you rebuild or clone a server you want the minimum amount of data to be applied in the shortest time.  Since Ignite images might be taken only weekly or even quarterly, they are useless, from that standpoint, as a current backup of volatile data.

You should have backup software specifically suited to the purpose to support non-operating system data --- databases, application filesystems, etc.  You can use anything from 'tar' ('pax' is superior, though), 'fbackup'  (at least through 11.31's lifetime) and commercial backup products like 'dataprotector' or 'Legato Networker' to name two.

Really, a number of strategies need to come into play depending on your environment.  Ignite is just one of them.

Ignite is HP-UX only. It does not work with any other flavors of Unix or Linux, though Linux users have been begging for it for years.
