Restoring a net backup without an Ignite Server?
If I have only one HP-UX workstation (an old 10.20 which cannot be upgraded), I believe I can use make_net_recovery to take a full backup to an NFS share (on a Windows server).
How can I restore this backup though?
I'd prefer to backup to a set of bootable CDs, but can't work out how to get Ignite-UX to do that.
I don't have a tape drive.
Any help much appreciated.
Thanks
Dave

Re: Restoring a net backup without an Ignite Server?
The ignite backup itself is a tar file. So it is possible to copy the Ignite image and extract individual files from it.
Doing a complete restore without an Ignite server is possible but daunting task.
You need the two files that Ignite puts on a system when you run boot client.
./boot/Rel_B.11.31/IINSTALL
./boot/Rel_B.11.31/IINSTALLFS
./boot/Rel_B.11.31/WINSTALL
./boot/Rel_B.11.31/WINSTALLFS
Same deal with 11.23 as well. Boot Client copies IINSTALL and IINSTALLFS
They need to be on your system and the system needs to be configured to boot off those files instead of boot vmunix
You still need those nice Ignite archive files available via NFS share.
I've never had the time to try this. But people have pulled it off.
Better to have an Ignite server.

Re: Restoring a net backup without an Ignite Server?
Thanks for the initial stuff - as I've only the one HP-UX system, I can't set up an Ignite Server to restore from.
How hard is it to build a floppy (or bootable CD) that will connect to an NFS share and restore the entire system?
If anyone has been there, done that, I'd love to hear from you.

Re: Restoring a net backup without an Ignite Server?
Get a tape drive or another disk and do a "dd" to this disk.
Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Restoring a net backup without an Ignite Server?
It isn't a Windows share It's an NFS share that happens to be on a Windows server

Re: Restoring a net backup without an Ignite Server?
It will probably not work with 10.20, but have a look at
IGNITE-LUX
(Ignite on Linux)
Hope this helps!

Torsten.
