VUE does not restart after booting from make_recovery tape
Everything goes well till the end when the system tries to open a VUE window for log in but fails.
A message appears "unable to write in /var/spool/sockets. It cannot open the VUE window and thus we cannot log in.
What I have realised is that the VUE process writes its entry into the directory /var/spool/sockets before opening up.
In the normal state the rights of the socket are drwxvwxvwx but upon restore they change to dr-xr-xr-x clearly wiping off the write access.
Does this sound familiar?

PHSS_11136: HP VUE 3.0 BMS 5.X Cumulative Patch
An unusual termination of SoftBench does not free a particular socket which then may be reassigned by the kernel for startup by the BMS. This used to cause VUE to hang as well, the fix before the patch was to blow away entries in the X11 dir etc etc ...
What happens if you ammend the permissions on the sockets dir ?
also try running dr_vue utility in case you have other permissions issues.
