HP SIM on RHEL 5 - IPMI not working

I have a few servers that are monitored by BMC Patrol running RHEL 5. I have been asked to include hardware monitoring by using HP SIM.

I've installed the relevant packages, following the documentation included with it. This includes HP SIM, SNMP agents, hp-health etc.

Running /etc/init.d/hp-health status shows that hpasm is running and its OK.

However, when I use the ipmitool to check the hardware status I get an error;

Could not open device at /dev/ipmi0 or /dev/ipmi/0 or /dev/ipmidev/0: No such file or directory
Get Device ID command failed
Unable to open SDR for reading

I've searched for this and in addition to installing the software I've run mknod to create the /dev/ipmi0 device. I've also had to load the IPMI kernel module manually. However, one of them, ipmi_si.ko will not load and the errors persist.

Is there a compreshensive "dummys guide" document on installing SIM? Does anyone know why things are not working or how to get it working?

Many thanks.

Do the packages that you've installed include "hp-OpenIPMI"?

Yes.

hp-health, hp-snmp, hp-OpenIPMI and the HP SIM installation media have been loaded and installed.

Without showing your IP address or password, what is the exact command you're using?

Re: HP SIM on RHEL 5 - IPMI not working

make sure the ipmi service is running

# /etc/init.d/ipmi status

If it's not running start the service
