Can't boot server from alternate path...

Greetings,

Here is a difficult one...

We have a HP-UX 10.20 K380 server with mirrored boot disks.
The boot disk failed. When we try the alternate boot disk...
We get:

"Can't initialized dump device" and goes to system panic.

Is there any chance to boot the system?

Hi Rui,

Try booting to maintenance mode on the mirror disk :

Interupt at PDC
Type "bo ALT"
Interact with IPL
Type "hpux -lm -lq" from the ISL prompt
When the system gets to maintenance mode, activate vg00 using "vgchange -a y -q n vg00"
Then type "lvlnboot -R" to restore all the boot/swap/dump areas.
Then reboot.

If the boot disk was mirrored correctly this should work.

I think the swap/dump space on the mirror disk was not initialzed( usning lvlnboot ) or not created at all .

YOu best bet is boot in single user lvm maintenance mode . From ISL type :
hpux -lm -is

When finally it boots up do
lvlnboot -R .

This should initialize the swap/dump space if created properly .

Then boot in multiuser mode .

You have to stop the machine.
When restart it, stop the autoboot and choose the boot device...In your case try " bo alt ". Them choose interact with ISL not and your system will start up from alternative device.
Very useful if you have got problems with you main disk.
